Matterhorn Ultraks, Zermatt. We're back in the blog! And I would like to start with my unforgettable experience in the Matterhorn Ultraks. My really big challenge of 2014. Last August 22th, my friend Antonio and I arrived to Zermatt in order to run, next morning, this majestic race. Our introduction to trail running with 16km long and 1200 meters of ascent and descent (maybe next year we will go for the 30km one!). The perfect organisation, the great volunteers and the amazing route made this race so special.

Matterhorn Ultraks, Zermatt. Estamos de vuelta en el blog! Y me gustaría empezar con la inolvidable experiencia del Matterhorn Ultraks. Mi gran reto de este año. El pasado 22 de agosto, mi amigo Antonio y yo llegábamos a Zermat para enfrentarnos, a la mañana siguiente a esta majestuosa carrera. Nuestros primeros pasos en el trail con 16 km y ás de 1200 m. de desnivel en subida y bajada, dejamos para el año que viene la de 30 km ;) La verdad es que la carrera es increíble, con una organización perfecta, voluntarios que te ayudaban en todo y sobretodo, un recorrido increíble.

 

The start/finish line is located at Church Square in Zermatt where the race can be followed live on a giant screen. This beautiful village is placed near the base of the colussus pyramid, Mattherhorn, which seems to be the most photographed mountain in the world! We've really enjoyed the trail even if it was harder in the climbs. The scenes are outstanding. There is no moment where you are not admiring the beauty of the surroundings.

La linea de salida y llegada está situada en la plaza de la Iglesia en el pueblo de Zermatt, dónde además se podia seguir la carrera en una pantalla gigante. Este precioso pueblo  está situado en la base del coloso Cervino, que parece ser la montaña más fotografiada del mundo, y no me extraña al ver su impresionante silueta! Realmente disfrutamos mucho la carrera a pesar de lo duro de las subidas. Los paisajes son sobrecogedores e incluso a veces no podías evitar pararte un segundo a admirar la belleza de lo que te rodeaba e incluso tomar una foto (para el blog)...

And finally we've finished the Matterhorn Ultraks! Everyone arriving to the finish line that I saw was jumping and crying. A race like this makes you fall in love with trail running. I recommend it to everyone! Thanks for still being there! =) See you next week and... Ultraks, see you in 2015!

Y finalmente llegamos a la meta! Todo el mundo a la llegada estaba emocionado por haberlo conseguido, la verdad es que es un momento muy especial. Una carrera como ésta te hace enamorarte del trail. Se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo! Gracias por seguir ahí. Nos vemos la semana que viene o... en agosto de 2015 en Zermatt!

Gornergrat rack railway, 3135 m., Valais

Gornergrat rack railway, Valais. At the beginning of our Swiss adventures it was just me who was living in Switzerland, so when Eduardo came to visit, we used to plan special trips to do together. As this one. We wanted to see one of the highest mountains in Europe, a symbol of Switzerland. The Matterhorn. We rented a car in Lausanne and drove for two hours, almost up to Zermatt; as cars are not allowed in the village (thank God!), you have to leave it in a parking located in the village right before Zermatt, and arrive there by train.

Gornergrat, tren cremallera, Berna. Al comienzo de nuestra vida en Suiza, sólo vivía yo aquí, así que cuando Eduardo venía, preparábamos viajes especiales para hacer juntos, como éste. Queríamos ver una de las montañas más altas de Europa y el símbolo de Suiza. El Cervino. Alquilamos un coche en Lausana y condujimos hasta allí durante dos horas, llegando casi a Zermatt, como los coches están prohibidos en el pueblo afortunadamente, lo dejamos en un aparcamiento y llegamos allí en tren. 
 

Zermatt is a lovely town, with the typical Swiss mountain constructions, wooden chalets etc. Once there, we took the rack railway to Gornergrat! Quite expensive. (almost 82.- without demi-tarif) It's not easy to describe the views from this platform at 3135 m. The glacier below, all the 4000m. peaks around you and just in front of you the Matterhorn. We drank a coffee while sunbathing in the terrace and admiring the amazing panoramic views.

Zermatt es un pueblo encantador, con las típicas construcciones suizas, los chalets de madera etc. Una vez allí cogimos el tren cremallera hacia Gornergrat, algo caro (casi 70 €, sin la demi-tarif), no es fácil describir las vistas desde esta plataforma a 3135 m. de altitud. El glaciar debajo, todos los picos alrededor y justo enfrente el Cervino. Tomamos un café admirando las increíbles vistas.
 

The story of the first climb to this mitical mountain, the Matterhorn, was very interesting and dramatic. The leader was Edward Whymper. After several attempts, the decisive year 1865, Whymper returned with new plans, deciding to attack the Matterhorn via its south face instead of the Italian ridge.  Four of the seven men of the team lost their lifes as a result. "We remained on the summit for one hour - 'One crowded hour of glorious life'," wrote Whymper. But after that, in the descent, the euphoria turned to tragedy: "For a few seconds we saw our unfortunate companions sliding on their backs, and spreading out their hands, endeavouring to save themselves. They passed from our sight uninjured, disappeared one by one, and fell from precipice to precipice on to the Matterhorngletscher (glacier) below, a distance of nearly 4,000 feet in height. From the moment the rope broke it was impossible to help them," wrote Whymper.

La historia del primer ascenso a esta mítica montaña, el Matterhorn, fue muy emocionante a la vez que dramática:  "Lo logró el 14 de julio de 1865 una cordada liderada por Edward Whymper y acabó trágicamente cuando cuatro de sus miembros cayeron hacia la muerte en el descenso. Llegaron a la cumbre Edward Whymper, Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Dougan, Douglas Hadow, Michel Croz y Peter Taugwalder, padre e hijo, a través de la arista Hörnli y la encontraron considerablemente más fácil de lo esperado. Sin embargo, en el descenso Hadow se resbaló, golpeando a Croz en los pies y arrastrando a Hudson y Douglas con él. Los siete estaban atados juntos, y podrían haber muerto todos, pero la cuerda se rompió, enviando a los cuatro citados hacia la muerte en el glaciar del Cervino, 1400 metros más abajo. Más tarde, se encontraron sus cuerpos, salvo el de Douglas, y se enterraron en la capilla de Zermatt"
