Rackets in Gryon

Rackets in Gryon, Vaud. Two weekends ago we wanted to start our ski season, but there wasn´t enough snow in the closest stations. Instead, we decided to rent snow rackets! We would have never imagined doing this kind of sport before living in Switzerland. It's easy, you have to fix them to your own boots, like old roller skates! Then you are ready to use them once you are on the snow.

Raquetas en Gryon, Vaud. Hace dos fines de semana queríamos comenzar nuestra temporada de esquí, pero no había suficiente nieve en las estaciones cercanas. Así que en lugar de eso, alquilamos raquetas de nieve! Nunca nos habríamos imaginado haciendo este tipo de deporte antes de vivir en Suiza. Es muy fácil, sólo tienes que fijarlas a tus propias botas, como los antiguos patines que se usaban con zapatos. Y te las pones una vez que estás sobre la nieve.

And we started walking through a deep valley full of snow, between pine trees and small rivers. It was like normal walking because the raquettes were really light, and the path was prepared for it, it was the route that started at Cergnement. 7 kilometers for everybody, really easy and nice to do. The only "down side " of it was the sun, it was a dark valley, we just saw it at 14.00 when we arrived to the middle point of the hike. There were several nice wooden houses, you could imagine yourself inside with a nice fire place :)

Empezamos a andar por un valle cerrado, lleno de nieve, a través de pinos y riachuelos. Era como andar normalmente ya que las raquetas son muy ligeras y el camino estaba preparado para ello. Empezamos la ruta en Cergnement. Eran 7 kms aptos para todo el mundo, muy fácil y agradable de hacer (en Villars habíamos pasado antes por la oficina de tuirsmo para ver las posibles rutas de raquetas ya abiertas). El único pero es que no nos dio el sol tanto cómo nos hubiese gustado, a las 14.00 por fin lo vimos, cuando llegamos a la mitad del recorrido. Había varias casas de madera muy bonitas, te podías imaginar dentro con una agradable chimenea :)

Bern

City of Bern. One of our favourite cities in Switzerland is Bern; the capital of the country is a small city with a population of about 130,000. It's really small for a european capital! and also compared to Geneva or Zurich but it's the most charming city in Switzerland. The center is really cozy, with old buildings well preserved with flowers in its windows, you feel like in a fairy tale. The busiest pedestrian streets are Marktgasse and Spitalgasse, a long shopping area with beautiful arcades. 

Ciudad de Berna. Una de nuestras ciudades preferidas en Suiza es Berna; la capital del país es de tamaño pequeñp-mediano, con una población de unas 130,000 personas. Es bastante pequeña para ser la capital si la compramos con Ginebra o Zurich. El centro de la ciudad es muy bonito y cuidado, con edificios antiguos bien conservados y con geranios rojos en las ventanas, te siente en como en un cuento de hadas. La calle más transitada por los peatones es Marktgasse, llena de tiendas en sus arcadas.

The clock tower, Zytglogge, was high technology in the XIII century! If you go out of the main street you will see a nice view of the river which has beautiful green-blue water in this season, from a park close to the cathedral. El reloj de la torre, Zytglogge, era alta tecnología en el siglo XIII. Cuando sales de la calle principal y te acercas al río, tienes una vista muy bonita de su agua vede azulada desde un parque cercano a la catedral. Para tomar un café en un sitio agradable podéis ir al Einstein Kaffe, abierto también los domingos http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/05/einstein-kaffe-berne.html. En Berna también hay arquitectura moderna que merece la pena visitar, como el Paul Klee Centrum, que ya os enseñaremos otra semana.



When you are in Bern we have a strange feeling, just around 100 km away from Lausanne and we don't understand a word, Swiss German speaking! La Quille du Diable, Vaud

La Quille du Diable, Refuge de l'espace. As we told you in Les Diablerets post, last weekend we went with our friends to Glacier 3000, and once there our main objectif was to get to La Quille du Diable, a view point absolutely espectacular. To arrive up there we had to take two cable car and one chairlift (70.-). Then we walked through ski slopes and some paths for 40 minutes, in a completely flat area on the glaciar. After this easy hike we arrived to La Quille du Diable.

Como os dijimos en el post de Les Diablerets, el pasado fin de semana fuimos con nuestros amigos a Glacier 3000, y allí, nuestro objetivo principal era llegar a la Quille du Diable, un punto de observación absolutamente espectacular. Para llegar allí tuvimos que coger dos telecabinas y un telesilla (70.-, la mitad con demi-tarif). Una vez allí, caminamos a través de pistas de esquí y algunos senderos durante 40 minutos, en un área completamente plana encima del glaciar. Después de esta sencilla excursión llegamos a la Quille du Diable.

At 2860 metres there was  Le Refuge de l'espace, a really nice bar where, from its terrace, you could admire all the Valais valley and the Alps behind. We sat for a cup of coffee, but even before the waitress knew if we were going to order something (we were planning on eating our homemade sandwiches) she offered us some blankets (really warm, made of cow leather with its hair) to take a seat and to enjoy the scenery of the mountains in that sunny and clear day. It was really nice of them. It was one of the best coffees we have ever taken, thanks to the breathtaking view.

A 2860 m. de altitud está el Refuge de l'Espace, un refugio-cafetería lleno de encanto, desde cuya terraza se puede admirar todo el valle de Valais y los Alpes. Tomamos un café, pero incluso antes de saber si ibamos a pedir algo (estabamos sacando nuestros bocadillos), la señora que atendía nos ofreció unas mantas (realmente cálidas, de piel de vaca) para que disfrutasemos calientes la vista que se ofrecía ante nosotros en ese soleado día. Fue muy amable por su parte. El café nos supo como el mejor que hemos tomado por las increíbles vistas.

Les Diablerets village, Vaud

Les Diablerets village, Canton de Vaud. This last weekend some friends of us, Javier and Elisabeth came to visit us from Madrid. We decided to show them a typical Swiss mountain village before going up to Glacier 3000. Les Diablerets isn't far from Lausanne and the weather forecast for last Saturday was perfect (not like in the Leman's area where is was foggy the whole day). We love the Swiss alpine architecture. All the façades (some of them with inscriptions) and balconies done in old wood creating a magic winter atmosphere

Les Diablerets, Canton de Vaud. Este fin de semana han venido unos amigos a visitarnos desde Madrid, Javier y Elisabeth. Decidimos enseñarles un típico pueblo suizo antes de subir al glaciar 3000. Les Diablerets no están lejos de Lausanne, y la previsión meteorológica para el pasado sábado era perfecta (no como en la zona del lago Léman dónde hubo niebla todo el día). Nos encanta la arquitectura Suiza alpina. Todas las fachadas y balcones en madera creando una atmósfera mágica e invernal.

 
It's nice when friends and family come to visit us and we go all over the country looking for new places, mountains, restaurants etc, We disconnect completely from work and rutine, feeling as  if we were on holidays. 

Nos encanta cuando amigos o familia vienen a visitarnos y nos recorremos Suiza buscando nuevos lugares especiales, como montañas, pueblos y restaurantes. Conseguimos desconectar completamente del trabajo y la rutina, sintiéndonos de vacaciones, incluso aunque sólo sea un fin de semana.

Le Kiosque, St. François, Lausanne

Le Kiosque St François, Lausanne. When we walk through the city everyday sometimes we dont' pay atention to details around us. This small pavilion, almost invisible, really well integrated, it's a good example of things we should appreciate. In Lausanne there's a large list of kiosques, bus stops, and other urban elements from another epoch full of charm that we want to feature in our blog.

Le Kiosque St François, Lausanne. Cuando andamos por la ciudad, cada día por el mismo sito, muchas veces no nos fijamos en los detalles que hay a nuestro alrededor. Este pequeño pabellón, que pasa desapercibido de lo bien integrado que está, es un buen ejemplo de esos detalles de la ciudad a los que deberíamos prestar más atención. En Lausanne hay una larga lista de quioscos, paradas de autobús y otros elementos urbanos de otra época, llenos de encanto.

  

At Place St François we find Le Kiosque, it is a small cafeteria close to one of the main bus stations of Lausanne. It was originally used as a ticket counter for buses, but it's been perfectly transformed in this lovely place, with the charm that only old things have.

En St François encontramos Le Kiosque, una pequeña cafetería situada junto a una de las principales paradas de autobús de Lausanne. En un principio fue el lugar donde se vendían los tickets para el autobús, pero fue perfectamente transformada en este sitio cautivador, con el encanto que sólo tienen las cosas antiguas. 
  

Leysin - La Berneuse (2048m.), Vaud

Leysin - La Berneuse (2048m.), Canton de Vaud. Two weeks ago the firsts snows arrived to the mountains (only to melt over the next week) So we wanted to enjoy them with an excursion at altitude. We phoned on Saturday to the Leysin's tourist office to know if it was possible to hike down from the top of Berneuse to the town. They gave us the ok! We were there early the next morning, ready to go up in the telecabine. We spoke to the person selling the tickets about our plan, but he advised us against it, because of the amount of snow, around 40 cm. Even like this, we decided to go up to see the views.

Leysin . La Berneuse, Canton de Vaud. Hace dos semanas las primeras nevadas cayeron en las montañas cerca de Lausana (fundiéndose a la semana siguiente). Así que quisimos verlo en directo. Llamamos el sábado a la oficina de turismo de Leysin para ver si era posible andar desde la cima de La Berneuse hasta el pueblo. Nos dieron el visto bueno, así que a la mañana siguiente estábamos allí, listos para coger el telecabina. Le contamos al vendedor de tickets nuestro plan, y nos aconsejó por completo hacerlo a causa de la cantidad de nieve que había, unos 40 cm. Incluso así decidimos subir para disfrutar de las vistas desde el restaurante.
  

Just to see the Lake Leman from there it's worth to go up, with all the snowed mountains around us!! We saw we were not really prepared for this amount of snow, but once there we went to the Tournant Restaurant Le Kuklos to drink a hot tea with our friends and to discuss our possible excursion. The restaurant is circular, there is a fix circle shaped part in the center, and other concentric circle that is turning very slowly, you can take a seat  and 1h 35mins. later you'll have turned around. Finally we decided to go down in the telecabine and to do a small part of the green hiking path (see plan linked).

Sólo por tener esa vista del lago Léman junto a todas las montañas nevadas a nuestro alrededor, merecía la pena subir. Fuimos al restaurante que hay en la cima, Restaurant Tournant Panoramique Le Kuklos, un restaurante que gira! Allí nos tomamos un té con nuestros amigos para pensar sobre nuestra posible excursión o alternativa en su defecto. El restaurante es muy curioso, es un edificio circular, con dos piezas, un círculo central fijo, y otro concéntrico que va girando muy despacio, te puedes sentar a comer y 1h 35mins después, habrás recorrido las vistas a tu alrededor, los 360°. Finalmente decidimos bajar en el telecabina y hacer una parte de la ruta verde (ver plano adjunto abajo)
 

If we have had snowshoes we could have done the hike from La Berneuse to Leysin, maybe next time... thanks for following us! =)
