Fall hiking: Lac des Vaux, Verbier

Verbier lac des Vaux randonnée hiking
Fall hiking: Lac des Vaux, Verbier. The same day we went to the top of Verbier, Montfort http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2014/09/glacier-de-tortin-montfort.html, we made the most of our time to do also a 3 hours hike, to see the Lac des Vaux. From Fontanet, head towards Les Attelas before going down to Lac des Vaux where you can enjoy the lake and have a little restles, we ate there. From here we followed the signs for Col de Mines, before ending at Les Ruinettes.

From the lake we could already see Verbier village; this almost circular walk is easily accesible to all levels of walker, even for our small friend Fito. In winter there are a blue and a red runs for skiers coming by.

Hiking to Salanfe lake. Last weekend we went on a beautiful hike up to "Le Luisin" (2786 m.) passing by Salanfe lake. This lake is located at an elevation of 1925 meters and it could be easily reached by walk from Van d'en Haut in 1 hour and a half. It´s an idyllic spot and well worth the walk up, especially in fall, alight with the vibrant red, oranges and yellows.

- Start point: Van d'en Haut (parking just above the village of Salvan)
- Finish point:
Van d'en Haut (round trip), passing by Salanfe dam and lake (offering exceptional views of Salanfe, the surrounding peaks and the dam).
- Grade: easy (with good weather conditions)
- Duration: 4 hours (it's also possible to make a tour around the lake, 2 hours more)
- Websites:  http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/hotels/auberge-de-salanfe-14519.html

Thanks for following us  and don´t miss the chance to hike this outstanding environment. See you soon =)

Glacier de Tortin, MontFort

Glacier de Tortin, MontFort. Exploring the glacier mountains in Verbier really is a unique and exciting activity and Summer is the perfect time to enjoy Mont Fort view (3.300m.) and its glacier, also known as Glacier de Tortin. It is easily accessible via cable car from Verbier. And you could feel the touch and live the experience of being on a glacier. That´s we've done two weeks ago with our friends. We didn´t know if it was allowed to walk over the glacier, some parts were dangerous because of the cracks but we didn´t stay there a long time. And it was really cool! First three pictures are taken from the cable car, an outstanding vertical view 100m. over the glacier and its cracks.

We can´t wait to do a real hike on a glacier with crampons, helmets... and a guide! Maybe next year in Monte Rosa. By the moment we can only highly recommend to visit one of Swiss glaciers and enjoy these amazings and huge ice flows. Unfortunately glaciers in Switzerland and all over the world are reducing their surface area and density. We hope climate change gives us a break and researchers can find the way to preserve them. Thanks for being there. See you next week!

Matterhorn Ultraks, Zermatt

Matterhorn Ultraks, Zermatt. We're back in the blog! And I would like to start with my unforgettable experience in the Matterhorn Ultraks. My really big challenge of 2014. Last August 22th, my friend Antonio and I arrived to Zermatt in order to run, next morning, this majestic race. Our introduction to trail running with 16km long and 1200 meters of ascent and descent (maybe next year we will go for the 30km one!). The perfect organisation, the great volunteers and the amazing route made this race so special.

Matterhorn Ultraks, Zermatt.

The start/finish line is located at Church Square in Zermatt where the race can be followed live on a giant screen. This beautiful village is placed near the base of the colussus pyramid, Mattherhorn, which seems to be the most photographed mountain in the world! We've really enjoyed the trail even if it was harder in the climbs. The scenes are outstanding. There is no moment where you are not admiring the beauty of the surroundings.

And finally we've finished the Matterhorn Ultraks! Everyone arriving to the finish line that I saw was jumping and crying. A race like this makes you fall in love with trail running. I recommend it to everyone! Thanks for still being there! =) See you next week and... Ultraks, see you in 2015!

Skiing in the Alpes Vaudoises

Vaud Alps, Villars-Diablerets. Those following us on instagram might have seen recently some snow and fog pictures. That's because last weekend we've enjoyed a awesome skiing day in the slopes of Villars and Les Diablerets, known as the Alps Vaudoises. Days like this make our stay in Switzerland something really unforgettable. The sun, snow and landscape look perfect, like a postcard.

Alpes vaudoises, Villars - Les Diablerets.

These two ski resorts, Villars-Gryon and Les Diablerets, are accessible with the same forfait that provides you with more than 200 km of pistes. And Villars, even if it is not as big as others is one of our favourites resorts in Switzerland. This time we went by car with two friends who came to visit us, it takes 50 minutes from Lausanne, and from Villars you need to take the cog railway to Bretaye, where the slopes are actually located.

This isn't our first time in Villars... you could also take a look to our last year post of this ski resort http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/01/villars-ski-switzerland.html We're sorry for the quality but the pics were taken with our iphone. Thank you very much for following us! See you next week!

Valais

subir al grammont suiza

Le Grammont, Valais. This mountain, about 2171 above sea level, stands in the South part of Lake Geneva. And there are several hiking paths which offer magnificent views of all the Leman's valley (in a sunny day). The walk starts in a small village, the Flon, at 1050m. and from there to the beautiful Lake Taney there is a altitude difference of almost 500m, in 2 km. It was quite hard for us. After taking a break, we walked up for two hours until we reached the jumelles, and the snow.

This second part of the hike, from the Lake Taney to the summit of Grammont is one of our best experiences in Switzerland, walking on snow in summer surrounded by huge montains. This part of the path is almost 4.2 km long with an altitude difference of 672 m. At the end, the incredible view of Lake Geneva from the summit of Grammont.

From up there we enjoyed a few minutes the 360º view before starting the walk down (about two hours until le Flon), the cities of Lausanne, Vevey, Montreux and the castle of Chillon. And in the "Alps" side, most of the Swiss peaks of the Canton of Valais, Fribourg etc, like the Rochers de Naye, the Dent of Jaman, the Tour d'Ai of Leysin, the Diablerets, the Moléson, etc. further away stand the Eiger and Jungfrau.
