Festival International de Ballons - Château d´Oex

Festival International de Ballons - Château d'Oex. In this lovely village, Château d'Oex, close to Gstaad, every year it takes place this international hot-air balloons festival. We were looking forward to visit this event for a long time, but because of the bad weather conditions, too much wind, flights were cancelled every time. The festival has taken place every year during 9 days at the end of January or beginning of February since 1979.

Festival International de Ballons - Château d'Oex. Château d'Oex es un pueblo con encanto, cerca de Gstaad, en el que se organiza un festival internacional de globos aerostáticos. Hemos querido ir desde hace un par de años, pero no fue posible debido a las malas condiciones meteorológicas, demasiado viento. Se hace cada año desde 1979 y dura 9 días, suele ser entre finales de enero y principios de febrero.

It is attended by nearly a hundred balloons from over 20 countries.  The participants enjoy flying in this snowy valley with its exceptional microclimate, which offers superb views over the Alps and Pre-Alps. There are several competitions: the hunt of an unknown balloon, a precision event, ... and also some passenger flights.

Suele haber casi una centena de globos de 20 países distintos. Los participantes disfrutan volando en este valle nevado debido a su excepcional microclima y las maravillosas vistas que ofrece sobre los Alpes y los Pre-Alpes. Hay varias competiciones: la caza del globo desconocido, pruebas de precisión, ...  también hay vuelos para pasajeros.

It is also famous for a unique event: the "night-glow" show, where all the balloons are exposed on the mountain, lit by their burners, during the evening of the 7th day.

Annecy-le-Vieux, France

Last Saturday we spent a great time with our friends in Annecy. This French city is a popular day trip from nearby Geneva (and Lausanne). And it is called the Venice of Savoie because a network of canals criss-crossing the town and bridges decorated with beautiful floral baskets remind of Venice. It is really pretty and charming but it is also very touristy and crowded! They were having an antique market last Saturday and all the streets were lined with beautiful furniture, décor and jewelry.
 

El pasado sábado pasamos un gran día con nuestros amigos en Annecy. Esta pequeña ciudad de Francia es un viaje típico para un día desde Ginebra (o Lausana). Se la llama la Venecia de Savoia debido a la red de canales que recorren la ciudad y la cantidad de puentes con decoraciones y flores. Es realmente bonito y con mucho encanto pero tambi´n muy turística! Había un antiguo mercado y las calles estaban llenas de objetos "vintage" y muebles antiguos!
 

Annecy´l lake (le lac d'Annecy) is very popular and the second largest lake of the country of France after the lake Bourget. After walking around and appreciated the beautiful old part of Annecy. We decided to rent a motor boat for one hour, costing 50 €, it was a super idea! A boat driving license isn´t necessary and we could enjoy the sunset from the middle of the lake!

 

El lago de Annecy es muy popular y el segundo más grande de Francia después del lago Bourget. Después de nuestra vuelta por el centro y disfrutar el encanto del centro histórico, decidimos alquilar una pequeña lancha a motor durante una hora, costaba 50€, fue una gran idea! Ni siquiera hace falta una licencia de barcos para tripularla y pudimos disfrutar el atardecer desde el centro del lago!

A morning in Lausanne's market

Lausanne´s Saturday market. Every Saturday and Wednesday morning there is an open market in Lausanne´s city center. You could find a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables coming from local farmers. The vendors are from all over the region and fill the ancient streets with their farm produce, flowers and homemade goodies, you can even try to bargain with them, in a superpolite "swiss" way ;)  We really love Lausanne´s market! (even if you need to get up early to enjoy it) especially in a sunny morning like last Saturday was. 

El mercado de los sábados en Lausana. Todos los sábados y miércoles por la mañana hay un mercado en las calles del centro de la ciudad. Se pueden encontrar muchas frutas y verduras frescas provenientes de granjeros locales. Los vendedores vienen de todas la región de la Suiza francesa y llenan las antiguas calles del centro de la ciudad con sus productos, flores y objetos artesanales, incluso se puede intentar regatear con ellos! , siempre desde la buena educación suiza ;) La verdad es que nos encanta el mercado (incluso si nos supone levantarnos pronto) especialmente en mañanas soleadas como fue ésta.

It's always nice to walk up and down the streets, buying some exotic fruits here, chatting with the people you meet... You'll also find second hand objets and furniture on the Place de la Riponne.

Es siempre agradable caminar arriba y abajo por las calles del centro. Comprando algo de fruta exótica en algún puesto y hablando con la gente conocida que te encuentras. También encontrareis objetos de segunda mano en los puestos de la plaza de la Riponne.

St. Saphorin, Lavaux

St-Saphorin, Lavaux. To enjoy these sunny days in Suisse Romande, we hiked last Saturday in the Lavaux Vineyards Terrasses, starting in the charming village of St-Saphorin, close to Vevey. We highly encouraged this Unesco world Heritage site if you're coming to Switzerland. St-Saphorin. Para disfrutar estos últimos días soleados en la Suiza Romande, hicimos una pequeña ruta en las viñas de Lavaux el pasado sábado, comenzando en el encantador pueblo de St-Saphorin. Realmente os recomendamos no perderos este sitio, patrimonio de la Unesco, si venís a Suiza. Incluso en invierno. We were hesitating about doing a bike-tour, but we needed to rent a bike and the rental places were a bit far away, so we decided just to walk. The nice thing is that there is a train station at St. Saphorin so you don't need to do a roundtrip. Through the village you arrive to the hiking path, and you can take it to Vevey or to Lausanne, we took this one. There's no need to arrive to Lausanne, you can always take the train on the way, Rivaz, Epesses, ... The hole footpath has 32 km and it leads from Lausanne-Ouchy to Chillon Castle; there're 7 circuits. In this villages you can taste their wine in the cellars that are opened to the public.

También existe la posibilidad de hacer un recorrido en bici, estuvimos pensando en hacerlo, pero los sitios de alquiler de bicis no estaban muy cerca, así que finalmente andamos. Un buen punto de partida es Saint Saphorin, donde hay parada de tren, así no hace falta hacer una ruta de ida y vuelta. A través del pueblo, subiendo, llegamos a la ruta pedestre, se puede coger en dirección Vevey o Lausanne, nosotros cogimos ésta última. No se necesita llegar a Lausanne, siempre se puede coger el tren entre medias, Rivaz, Epesses, ... El recorrido completo a pie es de 32 km y se dirige desde Lausanne-Ouchy (la zona del lago) al Castillo de Chillon; hay 7 circuitos. En los pueblos que formas parte de él, hay degustaciones de vino en las bodegas, que están abiertas al público.

Geneva, city of luxury

Geneva, city of luxury. When you think about Geneva, luxury might be the first word coming to your mind. While visiting the city you can see it's full of exclusive shops: watches, expensive clothes, the best fine jewellery, etc.  Despite its small size compared to London or Paris, with a population of 200.000, Geneva attracts a lot of tourists just for shopping.  But this city is really well known for its watch industry, that dates back to mid 1600’s, some of them are located right in the city centre: Patek Phillipe, Frank Muller, Piaget, Omega, Swatch...

Ginebra, ciudad de lujo. Cuando piensas en la ciudad de Ginebra, "lujo" es la primera palabra que te viene a la cabeza. Y cuando la visitas, te das cuenta de que no es por falta de motivos, las tiendas más exclusivas del mundo tienen su hueco en esta ciudad de 200.000 personas. A pesar de su pequeño tamaño en comparación con Londres o París, Ginebra también atrae a muchos turistas sólo por sus tiendas. Pero esta ciudad es realmente conocida por su industria de relojería, que data de mitades del siglo XVII, algunas de las marcas están situadas justo en la ciudad: Patek Phillipe, Frank Muller, Piaget, Swatch, Omega... 

We went for a walk last weekend in a rainny day and meanwhile we did some shopping. It's not a goog idea going to Geneva by car  because of its horrible traffic, probably due to its geographical situation with the lake  spliting the city in two parts. One of its symbols is the water stream that reaches over 30 metres of height, placed in the lake.

El fin de semana pasado fuimos a hacer unos recados y ya aprovechamos para hacer algunas compras. Uno de los motivos por los que no nos gusta ir a Ginebra en coche es el tráfico de la ciudad, tenemos la sensación de que da igual que sea entre semana o sábado que siempre tardas muchísimo desplazarte por allí. Probablemente debido a su situación geográfica, rodeados por el ago. Uno de sus símbolos es el chorro de agua que sale del lago, de unos 30 metros de altura.

Geneva is the city that hosts the highest number of international organisations in the world, being a centre of diplomacy and hosting the headquarters of the United Nations and the Red Cross. It deserves also a visit for its botanical garden, different museums and mainly for its old town (ancient cathedral, palaces, town hall...) you'll see this part of Geneva soon in our blog. Ginebra es la ciudad que alberga el mayor número de sedes de organismos internacionales en el mundo. Es un centro de diplomacia, con las Naciones Unidas y la Cruz Roja. Merece también una visita por su jardín botánico, variados museos y sobretodo por su casco antiguo (catedral, palacios, ayuntamiento..) Podreis ver esta parte de Ginebra pronto en el blog. Bern

City of Bern. One of our favourite cities in Switzerland is Bern; the capital of the country is a small city with a population of about 130,000. It's really small for a european capital! and also compared to Geneva or Zurich but it's the most charming city in Switzerland. The center is really cozy, with old buildings well preserved with flowers in its windows, you feel like in a fairy tale. The busiest pedestrian streets are Marktgasse and Spitalgasse, a long shopping area with beautiful arcades. 

Ciudad de Berna. Una de nuestras ciudades preferidas en Suiza es Berna; la capital del país es de tamaño pequeñp-mediano, con una población de unas 130,000 personas. Es bastante pequeña para ser la capital si la compramos con Ginebra o Zurich. El centro de la ciudad es muy bonito y cuidado, con edificios antiguos bien conservados y con geranios rojos en las ventanas, te siente en como en un cuento de hadas. La calle más transitada por los peatones es Marktgasse, llena de tiendas en sus arcadas.

The clock tower, Zytglogge, was high technology in the XIII century! If you go out of the main street you will see a nice view of the river which has beautiful green-blue water in this season, from a park close to the cathedral. El reloj de la torre, Zytglogge, era alta tecnología en el siglo XIII. Cuando sales de la calle principal y te acercas al río, tienes una vista muy bonita de su agua vede azulada desde un parque cercano a la catedral. When you are in Bern we have a strange feeling, just around 100 km away from Lausanne and we don't understand a word, Swiss German speaking!
