Skiing in Villars-Gryon

Villars-Gryon ski station. This last weekend we had a great time in one of our favourites ski resorts. Villars is 50 minutes away from Lausanne and it has a perfect south-facing location (not so perfect in winters like this one). We really love this small ski resort. Obviously Villars is not Verbier, Zermatt or Saas-Fee, but thanks to that there are few people in chairlifts and the atmosphere is homely with so many Swiss families around.

Estación de esquí de Villars- Gryon. El pasado domingo pasamos un día estupendo en una de nuestras estaciones favoritas. Villars. Tan sólo a 50 minutos de Lausana, tiene una localización perfecta en plena ladera sur (aunque no tan perfecta en este invierno con altas temperaturas). Realmente nos encanta esta pequeña y coqueta estación. Obviamente no es Verbier, Zermatt o Saas-Fee pero gracias a ello, encuentras relativamente poca gente en los telesillas y remontes!

Villars signature feature is its mountain's railway, which winds up the valley from Bex with final stop in Col de Bretaye, at an altitude of 1810m. A train trip that is really worth doing in Winter even if you don't like skiing.

Una de las particularidades de Villars es su vía de tren, que une el valle desde la localidad de Bex, hasta la parada final en el puerto de Bretaye, dónde puedes descender del tren directamente esquiando, a una altitud de 1810m. Un recorrido en tren que merece mucho la pena hacer, incluso aunque no te guste esquiar, para beber un café en el restaurante de Bretaye.

Les diablerets, Vaud

Les diablerests, Isenau. Close to Lausanne we've gone to finish our ski season, an hour and ten minutes by car and we arrived to this area, still in the Vaud canton. A perfect sunny day was waiting for us. Les Diablerets is a small town at 1200 m. above sea level. Around it there is a very big ski station. The name "les diablerets" derives from the french "le Diable", the devil.

Les Diablerets, Isenau. Para acabar nuetra temporada de ski, no hemos ido muy lejos de Lausanne, a hora y diez minutos, sin salir del cantón de Vaud. Un perfecto día soleado nos estaba esperando. Les Diablerets es un pequeño puebloe, a una altitud de 1200 m. y alrededor de él, encontramos las pistas de esquí. El curioso nombre de "les diablerets", viene de la palabra francesa "le Diable", el diablo.



From Les Diablerets, you can go to several ski stations, one comunicated with Villars, and really big. And the other, a bit smaller but not so crowded, Isenau. You can also go up to Glacier 3000. Desde Diablerets se accede a dos estaciones de esquí no comunicadas entre ellas, una en la fachada norte que se extiende hasta la estación de Villars, así que es bastante grande; y la otra, Isenau, más pequeña, pero con menos gente y super soleada por estar en la cara sur de la montaña, así que da el sol hasta última hora. We ate in the pists, we bought in a small bar a nice hot soup ans some sandwiches. It's worth to wait until find a deck chair and eat enjoying the view and the sun, but luckyly there wasn't so many people today.

 

Comimos en las pistas, compramos en una especie de chiringuito una sopa muy rica y unos bocadillos. Merece la pena esperar hasta encontrar una tumbona y comer disfrutando de las vistas y el sol, afortunadamente no había mucha gente ese dia.

 

The chairlift to Isenau is like in old times, a kind of small red cabin with charm. In the Middle Ages, the rock wall of the mountain massif which surrounds the small village was regarded as a dangerous and cursed place where the devil did his worst. This gave the same to Les Diablerets.

Las cabinas para subir hasta Isenau son como antiguamente, recuerdan a los compartimentos de una noria, con mucho encanto. En la Edad Media, el muro de roca de la montaña que rodea al pueblo era considerado muy peligroso, un lugar donde habitaba el diable. Eso dió el nombre a Les Diablerets.

Saas Fee, Valais

Last January we spent a weekend of ski in Saas Fee, in Valais. A small town of wooden houses where cars are not allowed. We rented an apartment with our friends in a chalet with a lovely fireplace. When we arrived to the town, an electric mini-bus was waiting for us to take us with the luggage.

El pasado enero pasamos un fin de semana de esquí en Saas Fee, en el cantón de Valais. Es un pequeño pueblo con casas de madera, donde los coches no pueden circular. Alquilamos un apartamento con nuestros amigos, era la planta entera de un chalet típico de madera, con su chimenea incluida :) Cuando llegamos al pueblo, un mini-bus eléctrico nos estaba esperando para llevarnos desde la estación de autobuses con el equipaje al alojamiento.



It's worth it to visit the town, not only skiing, with a lot of shops, and restaurants, surrounded of mountains. Once a year there's an ice climbing competition, a great spectacle with an after party, organised in the big parking that's in the entrance of Saas Fee.

Merece la pena visitar el pueblo, no sólo esquiar, hay muchas tiendas y restaurantes, rodeado de grandes montañas. Una vez al año es el campeonato de escalada sobre hielo, un gran espectáculo con fiesta posterior; organizado en el gran parking que se encuentra a la entrada de Saas Fee.

Saas Fee's ski station is enjoyable for good skiers, you can go up to 3500 m and go down skiing through red and black pists to the town 1800 m; really different to Gstaad, where the pists are easier, http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/02/gstaad-ski-berne.html  We ate in Morenia's restaurant at 2500 m. Once you've finished the day, it's a must to have a drink in the bar with the highest music in the town, everybody is in the terrasse with heater lamps.

La estación de ski de Saas Fee es muy entretenida para los buenos esquiadores, se puede subir hasta 3500 m y bajar hasta el pueblo, 1800 m, sin parar de esquiar por pistas rojas y negras; muy diferante a Gstaad donde las pistas son mucho más fáciles, http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/02/gstaad-ski-berne.html. Para tomarnos un decanso paramos a comer en el restaurante Morenia, 2500 m. Cuando has acabado la jornada de esquí, hay que ir al bar con la música más alta y animada, todo el mundo está en la terraza con las "lámparas estufa".
