Skiing in Villars-Gryon

Villars-Gryon ski station. This last weekend we had a great time in one of our favourites ski resorts. Villars is 50 minutes away from Lausanne and it has a perfect south-facing location (not so perfect in winters like this one). We really love this small ski resort. Obviously Villars is not Verbier, Zermatt or Saas-Fee, but thanks to that there are few people in chairlifts and the atmosphere is homely with so many Swiss families around.

Estación de esquí de Villars- Gryon. El pasado domingo pasamos un día estupendo en una de nuestras estaciones favoritas. Villars. Tan sólo a 50 minutos de Lausana, tiene una localización perfecta en plena ladera sur (aunque no tan perfecta en este invierno con altas temperaturas). Realmente nos encanta esta pequeña y coqueta estación. Obviamente no es Verbier, Zermatt o Saas-Fee pero gracias a ello, encuentras relativamente poca gente en los telesillas y remontes!

Villars signature feature is its mountain's railway, which winds up the valley from Bex with final stop in Col de Bretaye, at an altitude of 1810m. A train trip that is really worth doing in Winter even if you don't like skiing.

Una de las particularidades de Villars es su vía de tren, que une el valle desde la localidad de Bex, hasta la parada final en el puerto de Bretaye, dónde puedes descender del tren directamente esquiando, a una altitud de 1810m. Un recorrido en tren que merece mucho la pena hacer, incluso aunque no te guste esquiar, para beber un café en el restaurante de Bretaye.

Skiing in the Alpes Vaudoises

Vaud Alps, Villars-Diablerets. Those following us on instagram might have seen recently some snow and fog pictures. That's because last weekend we've enjoyed a awesome skiing day in the slopes of Villars and Les Diablerets, known as the Alps Vaudoises. Days like this make our stay in Switzerland something really unforgettable. The sun, snow and landscape look perfect, like a postcard. 

Alpes vaudoises, Villars - Les Diablerets. Aquellos que nos sigan en instagram habrán visto últimamente algunas fotos de nieve y niebla. Eso es porque el pasado fin de semana disfrutamos de un espectacular día de esquí en las pendientes de Villars y Diablerets, área también conocida como los Alpes Vaudoises. Días como éste hacen de nuestra estancia en Suiza algo que nunca olvidaremos. El sol, la nieve y el paisaje estaban perfectos, nítidos... como en una postal.

These two ski resorts, Villars-Gryon and Les Diablerets, are accessible with the same forfait that provides you with more than 200 km of pistes. And Villars, even if it is not as big as others is one of our favourites resorts in Switzerland. This time we went by car with two friends who came to visit us, it takes 50 minutes from Lausanne, and from Villars you need to take the cog railway to Bretaye, where the slopes are actually located.

Estas dos estaciones, Villars-Gryon y Les Diablerets, son accesibles con el mismo forfait que dan acceso a más de 200 km. de pistas. Y Villars, a pesar de no ser tan grande como otras, es una de nuestras estaciones favoritas en Suiza. Esta vez fuimos en coche con dos amigos que vinieron a visitarnos desde Madrid. Está a 50 minutos desde Lausana, y desde el pueblo de Villars hay que coger el tren cremallera que sube a Bretaye.

Rackets in Gryon

Rackets in Gryon, Vaud. Two weekends ago we wanted to start our ski season, but there wasn´t enough snow in the closest stations. Instead, we decided to rent snow rackets! We would have never imagined doing this kind of sport before living in Switzerland. It's easy, you have to fix them to your own boots, like old roller skates! Then you are ready to use them once you are on the snow.

Raquetas en Gryon, Vaud. Hace dos fines de semana queríamos comenzar nuestra temporada de esquí, pero no había suficiente nieve en las estaciones cercanas. Así que en lugar de eso, alquilamos raquetas de nieve! Nunca nos habríamos imaginado haciendo este tipo de deporte antes de vivir en Suiza. Es muy fácil, sólo tienes que fijarlas a tus propias botas, como los antiguos patines que se usaban con zapatos. Y te las pones una vez que estás sobre la nieve.

And we started walking through a deep valley full of snow, between pine trees and small rivers. It was like normal walking because the raquettes were really light, and the path was prepared for it, it was the route that started at Cergnement. 7 kilometers for everybody, really easy and nice to do. The only "down side " of it was the sun, it was a dark valley, we just saw it at 14.00 when we arrived to the middle point of the hike. There were several nice wooden houses, you could imagine yourself inside with a nice fire place :)

Empezamos a andar por un valle cerrado, lleno de nieve, a través de pinos y riachuelos. Era como andar normalmente ya que las raquetas son muy ligeras y el camino estaba preparado para ello. Empezamos la ruta en Cergnement. Eran 7 kms aptos para todo el mundo, muy fácil y agradable de hacer (en Villars habíamos pasado antes por la oficina de tuirsmo para ver las posibles rutas de raquetas ya abiertas). El único pero es que no nos dio el sol tanto cómo nos hubiese gustado, a las 14.00 por fin lo vimos, cuando llegamos a la mitad del recorrido. Había varias casas de madera muy bonitas, te podías imaginar dentro con una agradable chimenea :)

Les diablerets, Vaud

Les diablerests, Isenau. Close to Lausanne we've gone to finish our ski season, an hour and ten minutes by car and we arrived to this area, still in the Vaud canton. A perfect sunny day was waiting for us. Les Diablerets is a small town at 1200 m. above sea level. Around it there is a very big ski station. The name "les diablerets" derives from the french "le Diable", the devil.

Les Diablerets, Isenau. Para acabar nuetra temporada de ski, no hemos ido muy lejos de Lausanne, a hora y diez minutos, sin salir del cantón de Vaud. Un perfecto día soleado nos estaba esperando. Les Diablerets es un pequeño puebloe, a una altitud de 1200 m. y alrededor de él, encontramos las pistas de esquí. El curioso nombre de "les diablerets", viene de la palabra francesa "le Diable", el diablo.



From Les Diablerets, you can go to several ski stations, one comunicated with Villars, and really big. And the other, a bit smaller but not so crowded, Isenau. You can also go up to Glacier 3000. Desde Diablerets se accede a dos estaciones de esquí no comunicadas entre ellas, una en la fachada norte que se extiende hasta la estación de Villars, así que es bastante grande; y la otra, Isenau, más pequeña, pero con menos gente y super soleada por estar en la cara sur de la montaña, así que da el sol hasta última hora. We ate in the pists, we bought in a small bar a nice hot soup ans some sandwiches. It's worth to wait until find a deck chair and eat enjoying the view and the sun, but luckyly there wasn't so many people today.

 

Comimos en las pistas, compramos en una especie de chiringuito una sopa muy rica y unos bocadillos. Merece la pena esperar hasta encontrar una tumbona y comer disfrutando de las vistas y el sol, afortunadamente no había mucha gente ese dia.

 

The chairlift to Isenau is like in old times, a kind of small red cabin with charm. In the Middle Ages, the rock wall of the mountain massif which surrounds the small village was regarded as a dangerous and cursed place where the devil did his worst. This gave the same to Les Diablerets.

Las cabinas para subir hasta Isenau son como antiguamente, recuerdan a los compartimentos de una noria, con mucho encanto. En la Edad Media, el muro de roca de la montaña que rodea al pueblo era considerado muy peligroso, un lugar donde habitaba el diable. Eso dió el nombre a Les Diablerets.

This week we've gone to ski. Some friends, sun & snow. Amazing day. We chose Villars because is the closest ski station to Lausanne. We went by train with the snow'n rail pass (forfait+train) 20% discount in the train ticket. To get to the pists we took a zip train with our forfait. Up there we enjoyed the amazing views of the mountains, with the foggy under us.

 

Esta semana hemos ido a esquiar. La primera vez esta temporada. Fue un día genial! Amigos, sol y nieve. Elegimos la estación de Villars por estar cerca de Lausanne. Fuimos en tren hasta allí, comprando el snow'n rail, un ticket de forfait+ tren de ida y vuelta, con el que te hacen un 20% de decuento en el tren. Una vez arriba disfrutamos de las increibles vistas de las montañas, con la niebla bajo nosotros.

Villars is one of the best ski's stations close to Léman lake. Very nice for beginners (blue pists easily reached) and also for an advanced level. You can eat in the pists some pasta or sandwiches, not expensive, at Cookie Café. When you're going to finish your skiing day you can go down to the town by train or skiing blue pists.

Villars es una de las mejores pistas de ski cerca del lago Léman. Es muy agradable para principiantes (tiene pistas azules a las que se accede facilmente) y también está bien para niveles más avanzados. Cuando vas a finalizar tu día de ski, puedes bajar hata el pueblo en tren o simplemente esquiando por pistas azules.

The skiing area of Villars includes the two smaller areas of Villars/Bretaye and Gryon and is also linked via the route over Le Meilleret with the Les Diablerets skiing area, there's a glacier skiing area at 3000 m.  44 lifts and 125 km of ski slopes. There are also snowparks, 44 km of cross-country skiing trails, and to relax you can visit the thermal baths in Lavey.

El área de ski de Villars incluye  Villars/Bretaye y Gryon, y está también unida a través de Le Meilleret con la estación de Les Diablerets, donde hay una zona de pistas sobre glaciar a 3000 m. En total hay 44 remontes y 125 km de pistas. También hay snowparks y 44 km de pistas de esquí de fondo; y para relajarte puedes ir a las termas de Lavey.
