James Blunt's restaurant, La Vache - Verbier. James Blunt, the British pop star, opened his own ski restaurant in Verbier. La Vache is situated at 2730 meters above sea level, with a spectacular view across the Swiss Alps. During our ski day some weeks ago, we spent our lunch time there. A huge variety of pizzas, soups and hamburgers, we thought it would be something more glamorous, but it was tasty. A bit expensive for a pizza, but it's like this in a place like Verbier. 


Restaurante La Vache, Verbier.  James Blunt, la estrella británica del pop, abrió su propio restaurante en las pistas de esquí de Verbier. La Vache está situada a 2730 metros sobre el nivel del mar con unas vistas impresionantes de los Alpes Suizos. Hace unas semanas estuvimos esquiando allí y aprovechamos para conocer este restaurante. Tienen una gran variedad de pizzas, sopas y hamburguesas, no era exactamente lo que nos esperábamos, pero estaban buenas. Un poco caro para este tipo de comida, pero es lo normal en un sitio como Verbier.

It's decorated warmly, with some cows in the terrace, it's a cool place to stop for lunch.

Skiing in Villars-Gryon

Villars-Gryon ski station. This last weekend we had a great time in one of our favourites ski resorts. Villars is 50 minutes away from Lausanne and it has a perfect south-facing location (not so perfect in winters like this one). We really love this small ski resort. Obviously Villars is not Verbier, Zermatt or Saas-Fee, but thanks to that there are few people in chairlifts and the atmosphere is homely with so many Swiss families around.

Estación de esquí de Villars- Gryon. El pasado domingo pasamos un día estupendo en una de nuestras estaciones favoritas. Villars. Tan sólo a 50 minutos de Lausana, tiene una localización perfecta en plena ladera sur (aunque no tan perfecta en este invierno con altas temperaturas). Realmente nos encanta esta pequeña y coqueta estación. Obviamente no es Verbier, Zermatt o Saas-Fee pero gracias a ello, encuentras relativamente poca gente en los telesillas y remontes!

Villars signature feature is its mountain's railway, which winds up the valley from Bex with final stop in Col de Bretaye, at an altitude of 1810m. A train trip that is really worth doing in Winter even if you don't like skiing.

Una de las particularidades de Villars es su vía de tren, que une el valle desde la localidad de Bex, hasta la parada final en el puerto de Bretaye, dónde puedes descender del tren directamente esquiando, a una altitud de 1810m. Un recorrido en tren que merece mucho la pena hacer, incluso aunque no te guste esquiar, para beber un café en el restaurante de Bretaye.

Glacier de Tortin, MontFort

Glacier de Tortin, MontFort. Exploring the glacier mountains in Verbier really is a unique and exciting activity and Summer is the perfect time to enjoy Mont Fort view (3.300m.) and its glacier, also known as Glacier de Tortin. It is easily accessible via cable car from Verbier. And you could feel the touch and live the experience of being on a glacier. That´s we've done two weeks ago with our friends. We didn´t know if it was allowed to walk over the glacier, some parts were dangerous because of the cracks but we didn´t stay there a long time. And it was really cool! First three pictures are taken from the cable car, an outstanding vertical view 100m. over the glacier and its cracks.

 

Glaciar de Tortin, MontFort. Explorar las montañas de Verbier y sus glaciares es una experiencia única y el verano es uno de los mejores momentos para ello, especialmente para disfrutar la vista desde MontFort y el glaciar de Tortin. Es muy fácil llegar a él a través del telecabina. A allí se puede sentir la sensación de tocar el glaciar y estar sobre él. Eso es lo que hicimos hace dos semanas con nuestros amigos. La verdad es que no sabíamos si estaba permitido caminar sobre el glaciar y algunas partes era peligrosas por las grietas, pero bueno, no estuvimos mucho tiempo. Y fue una gran experiencia! Las primeras tres fotos están tomadas desde el telecabina, una increíble vista vertical a 100m. sobre el glaciar y sus grietas.
 

We can´t wait to do a real hike on a glacier with crampons, helmets... and a guide! Maybe next year in Monte Rosa. By the moment we can only highly recommend to visit one of Swiss glaciers and enjoy these amazings and huge ice flows. Unfortunately glaciers in Switzerland and all over the world are reducing their surface area and density. We hope climate change gives us a break and researchers can find the way to preserve them. Tenemos muchas ganas de hacer una verdadera ruta sobre un glaciar con crampones, cuerdas, cascos etc.. y con un guía! Quizás el año que viene en el Monte Rosa. Por el momento solo podemos recomendar visitar alguno de estos glaciares en Suiza y disfrutar de estas enormes masas de hielo. Desgraciadamente tanto aquí como en el resto del mundo los glaciares estrán desapareciendo, esperemos que el cambio climático nos de un respiro y los investigadores consigan conservarlos! Crans Montana, Valais

Crans Montana, Valais. Some weeks ago we went to this famous ski resort. It is right in the heart of Valais, above Sierre. And it's known in Switzerland because some personalities have a house there, like sir Roger Moore. Like we told you some posts ago, this year the snow cover on the slopes is really weak (or almost inexistant) in some ski stations. Crans Montana isn't an exception, it´s even worse here because all the slopes are in a perfect south orientation. 

Crans Montana, Canton de Valais. Hace un par de semana fuimos a esta famosa estación de esquí. Se encuentra en el corazón del Valais, por encima de Sierre. Y es conocida en Suiza porque algunas famosas personalidades tienen casa allí. Como os contamos hace algunas entradas, esta año la capa de nieve es realmente fina (o casi inexistente) en algunas estaciones. Y Crans Montana no es una excepción, incluso más ya que todas sus pistas están orientadas a sur.

The resort is a fusion of two centers:  Crans and Montana, two postcard perfect villages full of luxury shops. The skiing area has about 140 km. of slopes, topped by the Plaine Morte at 2,927 m. One of the longest ski slopes in the Alps.

El resort surge de la fusión de los dos centros de Crans y Montana, dos pueblos de postal llenos de tiendas de lujo, y el área de esquí está compuesta por 140 km. de pistas, cuyo punto más alto es la Plaine Morte a 2927m. Dando lugar a una de las pistas más largas de los Alpes.

In our particular opinion (as two ski amateurs) the slopes quality, restaurants and installations aren´t  of such high level in spite of the famous Plaine Morte, a narrow, really long red piste. But there is somenthing that provides Crans Montana an excepcional position in the Swiss ski stations, somenthing that we've never found before: the breathtaking view from the plateau of all the Valais Alps, including the Weisshorn, Matterhorn and far away the Montblanc.

En nuestra opinión, como aficionados al esquí, la calidad de las pistas, restaurantes e instalaciones no están en un nivel muy alto a pesar de la famosa Plaine Morte, la estrecha pista roja increíblemente larga. Pero hay algo que situa a Crans Montana en una posición excepcional entre las estaciones de esquí de Suiza, algo que no habíamos encontrado antes, la increíble vista que te deja sin respiración de todos los Alpes, incluyendo los picos Weisshorn, Matterhorn y más allá el Montblanc.

Portes du Soleil, Les Crosets

Portes du Soleil, Les Crosets. The snow has finally arrived, but not as much as last year! This winter is being a big disappointment for some Swiss ski resorts, like Les Crosets (Portes du soleil), with the economical impact of the lack of snow in local business and in the whole touristic season. Last weekend we went there by car. It's not far from Lausanne and it was surprising how comfortable this ski station is. You park the car under the slopes, you don't need to walk long distances carrying your skis. This time we decided to take a two hours ski lesson once we were there, at l'ecole de ski http://www.funschool.ch/¨

Portes du Soleil, Les Crosets. ¡La nieve ha llegado! ¡ Temporada de esquí oficialmente inaugurada! El finde semana pasado fuimos a esquiar a Portes du Soleil. Fuimos en coche hasta Les Crosets, y fue sorprendente la comodidad del parquing, estaba situado justo debajo de las pistas de esquí, así que no había que andar grandes distancias cargando con todo el equipo, cosa que se agradece. Esta vez decidimos dar dos horas de clase en L'ecole de ski , podéis echar un ojo a su web para ver precios y horarios. http://www.funschool.ch/ 

The weather was perfect, really sunny, so we decided to make sandwiches at home to eat on the slopes. We were inspired by an American website called 300 Sandwiches, it's made by a woman who prepares sandwiches for his future husband, 300 sandwiches before he proposes her marriage! all of them are really yummy! She even has a book!  http://300sandwiches.com/ Our result was a sandwich with roastbeef, tomme's fromage (typical from Vaud, Switzerland) and mushrooms with onion, delicious!

El tiempo era perfecto, súper soleado, así que decidimos preparar unos bocadillos para comer en las pistas. Esa semana habíamos descubierto un blog en el que aparecen unos sandwiches super apetitosos, 300 Sandwiches. Es una web hecha por una mujer que prepara sandwiches a su novio, hasta llegar a 300, que será cuando él le pida matrimonio. http://300sandwiches.com/

Portes du Soleil is really big a ski station, you can arrive from Switzerland or from France, but for us, with the slopes on the Swiss side was more than enough and the forfait it was not expensive 50.-Thanks for following us!!

Portes du Soleil es una estacion de esquí con un dominio muy grande, se puede llegar desde Suiza o desde Francia. Para un día tienes pistas de sobra sólo en la parte Suiza, de esta forma el forfait nos costó 50.- Gracias por seguirnos una semana más!

Rackets in Gryon

Rackets in Gryon, Vaud. Two weekends ago we wanted to start our ski season, but there wasn´t enough snow in the closest stations. Instead, we decided to rent snow rackets! We would have never imagined doing this kind of sport before living in Switzerland. It's easy, you have to fix them to your own boots, like old roller skates! Then you are ready to use them once you are on the snow.

Raquetas en Gryon, Vaud. Hace dos fines de semana queríamos comenzar nuestra temporada de esquí, pero no había suficiente nieve en las estaciones cercanas. Así que en lugar de eso, alquilamos raquetas de nieve! Nunca nos habríamos imaginado haciendo este tipo de deporte antes de vivir en Suiza. Es muy fácil, sólo tienes que fijarlas a tus propias botas, como los antiguos patines que se usaban con zapatos. Y te las pones una vez que estás sobre la nieve.

And we started walking through a deep valley full of snow, between pine trees and small rivers. It was like normal walking because the raquettes were really light, and the path was prepared for it, it was the route that started at Cergnement. 7 kilometers for everybody, really easy and nice to do. The only "down side " of it was the sun, it was a dark valley, we just saw it at 14.00 when we arrived to the middle point of the hike. There were several nice wooden houses, you could imagine yourself inside with a nice fire place :)

Empezamos a andar por un valle cerrado, lleno de nieve, a través de pinos y riachuelos. Era como andar normalmente ya que las raquetas son muy ligeras y el camino estaba preparado para ello. Empezamos la ruta en Cergnement. Eran 7 kms aptos para todo el mundo, muy fácil y agradable de hacer (en Villars habíamos pasado antes por la oficina de tuirsmo para ver las posibles rutas de raquetas ya abiertas). El único pero es que no nos dio el sol tanto cómo nos hubiese gustado, a las 14.00 por fin lo vimos, cuando llegamos a la mitad del recorrido. Había varias casas de madera muy bonitas, te podías imaginar dentro con una agradable chimenea :)

La Quille du Diable, Vaud

La Quille du Diable, Refuge de l'espace. As we told you in Les Diablerets post, last weekend we went with our friends to Glacier 3000, and once there our main objectif was to get to La Quille du Diable, a view point absolutely espectacular. To arrive up there we had to take two cable car and one chairlift (70.-). Then we walked through ski slopes and some paths for 40 minutes, in a completely flat area on the glaciar. After this easy hike we arrived to La Quille du Diable.

La Quille du Diable, refugio de l'Espace. Como os dijimos en el post de Les Diablerets, el pasado fin de semana fuimos con nuestros amigos a Glacier 3000, y allí, nuestro objetivo principal era llegar a la Quille du Diable, un punto de observación absolutamente espectacular. Para llegar allí tuvimos que coger dos telecabinas y un telesilla (70.-, la mitad con demi-tarif). Una vez allí, caminamos a través de pistas de esquí y algunos senderos durante 40 minutos, en un área completamente plana encima del glaciar. Después de esta sencilla excursión llegamos a la Quille du Diable.

At 2860 metres there was  Le Refuge de l'espace, a really nice bar where, from its terrace, you could admire all the Valais valley and the Alps behind. We sat for a cup of coffee, but even before the waitress knew if we were going to order something (we were planning on eating our homemade sandwiches) she offered us some blankets (really warm, made of cow leather with its hair) to take a seat and to enjoy the scenery of the mountains in that sunny and clear day. It was really nice of them. It was one of the best coffees we have ever taken, thanks to the breathtaking view.

A 2860 m. de altitud está el Refuge de l'Espace, un refugio-cafetería lleno de encanto, desde cuya terraza se puede admirar todo el valle de Valais y los Alpes. Tomamos un café, pero incluso antes de saber si ibamos a pedir algo (estabamos sacando nuestros bocadillos), la señora que atendía nos ofreció unas mantas (realmente cálidas, de piel de vaca) para que disfrutasemos calientes la vista que se ofrecía ante nosotros en ese soleado día. Fue muy amable por su parte. El café nos supo como el mejor que hemos tomado por las increíbles vistas.
