Einstein kaffee, Berne

Einstein Kaffee & Rauchsalon. Last weekend walking around Bern, we´ve found this lovely and charming cafeteria. Most of restaurants were closed on Sunday but this one was opened (and full of people), really well-designed, with wood and stone in walls and ceilings, creating a cool atmosphere. With a menu of some cold food, mainly you can ask for caffees and cakes. And this is what we did.

Einstein Cafetería en Berna. El pasado fin de semana, caminando por Berna, encontramos esta acogedora cafetería. La mayoría de los restaurantes estaban cerrados el domingo, pero éste estaba abierto y lleno de gente. Realmente muy bien diseñado, con madera y piedra en paredes y techos, creando una buena atmósfera. En el menú encontramos algo de comida fría, aunque principalemente se pueden pedir cafés y tartas, que es lo que hicimos.

Siedlung Thalmatt, Atelier 5, Bern

This week our post is dedicated to one work of the great Swiss architects Atelier 5. We've already done a post of their project, Siedlung Halen, also placed in the city of Bern  http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/01/siedlung-halen-atelier5-bern.html   This project was the precursor of this kind of housing in that time. There're references to Le Corbusier, as the use of concrete and many others.

Esta semana nuestro post está dedicado a los grandes arquitectos suizos Atelier 5. Ya hemos hecho otro post con su proyecto Siedlung Halen, también ubicado en Berna.  http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/01/siedlung-halen-atelier5-bern.html . royecto que fue el precursor de este tìpo de vivienda. Hay referencias claras a Le Corbusier, como el uso de hormigón y muchas otras.

This dwelling complex was designed between 1967 and 1974. The name of the components of Atelier 5 was  Edwin Fritz, Rolf Hesterberg, Samuel Gerber, Hans Hostettler, and Alfredo Pini. The most part of them got a house in the complex and they're still living there. We don't know if the architects were conscient of how important would be nature in his project when they designed it, but when we arrived there we could see how the green had  taken all the protagonism to the concrete.

Este complejo de vivienda fue diseñado entre 1967 y 1974. El nombre de los componentes de Atelier 5 era Edwin Fritz, Rolf Hesterberg, Samuel Gerber, Hans Hostettler y Alfredo Pini. Muchos de ellos adquirieron una casa de la agrupación, y todavía viven allí. No sabemos si los arquitectos serían conscientes en la época de lo imporante que sería la naturaleza en su proyecto cuando lo diseñaron, pero cuando llegamos allí pudimos ver como el verde habia quitado protagonismo al hormigón.

 

To provide warmth to the corridors they mix two materials, concrete and wood. We were walking and taking pictures of the project and we were really lucky because we could visit the house of one of the members of Atelier 5 tha designed this project. It was amazing, and of course also the decoration, the furniture, etc. was great.

Para proporionar calidez a los corredores que dan acceso a las viviendas, mezclaron dos materiales, el homigón y la madera. No hay una vivienda tipo, hay muchísimos tipos de vivienda distinta, casas de varias plantas con jardín en la parte trasera, pisos con terrazas, de distintos tamaños, etc. Mientras paseábamos y hacíamos fotos de cada rincón nos encontramos con uno de los arquitectos fundadores de Atelier 5 y fue tan amable que nos enseñó su vivienda por dentro.  
 

We'd really recommend you to visit this example of architecture, if you are travelling around Bern (even if you aren't an architect), and you want to understand how was the begining of swiss architecture in the 50s 60s and also the perfect way of mixing nature, landscape and architecture. Realmente recomendamos visitar este ejemplo de arquitectura, si se está viajando cerca de Berna, incluso aunque no seais arquitectos. Gstaad, Berne

Gstaad. One of the most famous (and expensive) Swiss ski stations. A really nice town, like a card postal, with expensive shops and restaurants. We got to this place by train, a really special one,  the panoramic Goldenpass that departs from Montreux, going up through the vineyards with amazing views of Léman's lake. Once there, the chair lift is very close to the train station, something to thank when you're with all the ski equipment.

Gstaad. Es una de las estaciones de esquí más famosas (y caras). Es un pueblo muy bonito con chalets de madera, como una postal, con buenas tiendas y restaurantes. Fuimos hasta allí en tren, en uno muy especial, el tren panorámico Goldenpass que sale de Montreux. Sube haciendo zigs zags entre las viñas que miran al lago Léman. Una vez allí, el telesilla está muy cerca de la estación, algo a agradecer cuando vas con toda la equipación de esquí.

 
Gstaad, in Château-d'Oex, there's an international hot-air balloon festival, with the participation of the world's best pilots. An incredible espetacle hat takes place the last week of January- first of February. This year somedays were cancelled because of the snow.

Cerca de Gstaad, en Château-d'Oex, hay un festival internacional de globos aeroestáticos, con la participación de los mejores expertos. Un espectáculo precioso que suele tener lugar entre los útimos días de enero y primeros de febrero. Este año fue suspendido algunos días a causa de la nieve.

 

Fabulous pistes, wide, long; a hundred of blue ones and red ones, maybe it's not the best ski station for high level skiers, (there are not so many of black ones)  but you can also compensate practicing off piste skiing. There is really a big domain of snow.

Pistas geniales, inmensas, muy anchas y largas;  gran número de pistas azules y rojas, quizás no sea la mejor estación para esquiadores de un alto nivel, ya que no hay muchas negras, pero se puede compensar practicando esquí fuera de pista. Realmente hay un gran dominio esquiable.

 

With the snow'n rail (forfait+train) from Lausanne, the price was 70 CHF. Just the forfait is 59 CHF one day. If you go up to Glacier 3000, the pistes are communicated with another ski stations, Villars and Diablerets. El precio del ticket de tren + forfait (snow'n rail) desde Lausanne es de 70 CHF. Sólo el forfait, sin tren son 59 CHF el día. Realmente merece la pena ir en tren a las pistas. Jungfrau, Bern

A good excursion in spring or summer is Jungfrau. It's one of the musts in Switzerland, and it´s really worth it in spite of the price. To get there we went by car until Lauterbrunnen, we left it in a parking close to the train station, and we took the train to the top.  Another option is getting there through the other valley, Grindelwald. The way in the train is really beautiful; part of it is inside of the mountain, but even there you can find viewpoints. There's snow in the top even in summer, you can ski for all the year.

Una buena excursión para primavera o verano es Jungfrau. Es una visita oligada en Suiza, merece la pena a pesar del precio. Para llegar allí, puedes ir en coche hasta Lauterbrunnen y dejar el coche en un parking cercano a la estación de tren, cogiendo allí el tren hasta la cima. La otra opción es llegar allí a través del valle de Grinderwald. El trayecto en el tren es muy bonito; parte de él es al aire libre y otra pequeña parte por un túnel dentro de la montaña, pero incluso ahí hay paradas de tren para asomarse a unos miradores excavados en la roca.

The train goes up until 3454 m, trough 9,3 km. The time of constuction was 16 years, 1896-1912. A hundred of italian workers were involved in it. It cost 16 millions of Suisse Francs, the double that was planned. The station at Jungfraujoch was inaugurated on 1 August 1912.

El tren sube hasta 3454 m, a través de 9,3 km. El tiempo de construcción fue de 16 años, 1896-1912. Unos cien obreros italianos participaron en ello. El coste ascendió a 16 millones de francos suizos, el doble de lo previsto. La estación en Jungfraujoch fue inaugurada el 1 de agosto de 1912.

Sphinx panoramic terrace, 3571 m, was inagurated in 1996. In 27 seconds a lift takes you there. Originally, in 1931, it started working as an investigation station and in 1950 the cupola was placed to be an astronomic observatory. 

La actual terraza Sphinx, a 3571 m, se inauguró en 1996 como terraza panorámica. En tan sólo 27 segundos un ascensor nos sube hasta allí. En un principio, 1931, fue inaugurada como estación de investigación y en 1950 se colocó la cúpula al observatorio astronómico.

View of Aletsch Glacier

The view of the Aletsch Glacier is unique: you can admire the glacier from up above with a gorgeous view of the enormous stream of ice. Another impressive fact about the Aletsch Glacier is its length: at about 23 kilometers (14¼ miles), the Aletsch Glacier is the longest stream of ice in the Alps.

La vista del glaciar Alestch es única, se puede admirar el glaciar desde arriba con la grandiosa vista de la enorme lengua de hielo. Otro dato impresionante del Alestch es su longitud, cerca de 23 kilómetros, siendo, por tanto, el más grance de los Alpes.

Siedlung Halen, Atelier 5

This amazing and complex example of high density building was designed by 5 young architects between 1953 and 1955. Edwin Fritz, Rolf Hesterberg, Samuel Gerber, Hans Hostettler, and Alfredo Pini. In 1954, the group approached the owner of a large open field on a hillside 3 kilometers from the center of Bern with a proposal to build a large residential community on a site overlooking the Aare River and a rolling wooded landscape on the outskirts of Bern . Under an unusual arrangement with the developer, the architects were responsible for the sale of the houses.

Este increíble y complejo ejemplo de edificación residencial de alta densidad fue diseñado por cinco jóvenes arquitectos entre 1953 y 1955. Edwin Fritz, Rolf Hesterberg, Samuel Gerber, Hans Hostettler y Alfredo Pini. En 1954, el grupo se dirigió al propietario de una gran superficie de terreno en una colina a 3 kilómetros del centro de Berna con su proposición de proyecto. Esa zona permitía vistas al río Aare así como un entorno natural idóneo en las afueras de Berna. Un inusual acuerdo llevó a los arquitectos a ser los responsables de la venta de las casas.

The development includes 33 larger dwellings (type 12 houses), 41 smaller dwellings (type 380 houses) and five studios for a total of 79 units. The dwellings have between four and six room and are either four or five meters wide. There is a cafe and a small shop, swimming pool and underground parking. The development is surrounded by protected woodland, to be shared by all of the occupants.

El proyecto incluye 79 unidades, de las cuales 22 son grandes, 41 pequeñas y 5 estudios. Cada unidad tiene entre 4 y 6 habitaciones, y entre 4 o 5 metros de ancho. En el conjunto existen también una cafetería y una pequeña tienda, así como piscina y parking subterráneo. Todo estàa rodeado por un bosque de uso compartido entre todos los ocupantes.

We could distinguish between all the type of houses in two groups: the ones with the staircase perpendicular to the long axis of the houses an the othes with the staircase parallel to the long axis.

Entre todos los tipos de casas podemos diferenciar dos grupos básicamente: los que tienen la escalera perpendicular al eje longitudinal de la vivienda y los que tienen la escalera paralela a este eje.

The South façade is the most opened to the outside, with big windows that brings you to the terrace or diresctly to the garden. This garden is the transition between the house and the public natural space, the conexion.

La fachada sur de las viviendas es la más abierta al exterior, con grandes vidrieras, dando a terrazas al aire libre,  que a su vez se comunican con el jardín. Este jardín es la transición entre la vivienda y el espacio natural público, la conexión entre ambos espacios.
