Glacier 3000, Vaud

Glacier 3000, snow paradise at 3000m. Skiing in summer in Switzerland it's possible and this is one of the places to practice it! It's a good idea to include a visitt to the alpine village of Les Diablerets (1200 m), and afterwards continue to this glacial area at 3000 m. of altitude that links the cantons of Bern, Valais and Vaud. There you can hike or practise winter sports, with an amazing panoramic view over the eternal snows, and all the mountains over 4000m. of altitude that sourround it, being the Cervin or the Mont Blanc among them.

Glaciar 3000. Esquiar en verano es posible en Suiza, y este es uno de los sitios para hacerlo! Una buena excursión, es combinar una visita a Les Diablerets (1200 m), un pueblo alpino, y después continuar a su glacaiar a 3000 metros de altitud. Allí se puede hacer hiking o practicar deportes de invierno sobre las nieves eternas con una vista panorámica increíble: todo montañas alrededor en 360°, 24 cumbres con más de 4000 metros de altitud, entre ellas el Cervino y el Mont Blanc.

There are 25 km of ski slopes, 3.5 of cross-country ski, the snowpark, raquettes paths (50 km) and "l'alpine coaster". It's a roller coaster where you can reach 40 km/h, it was closed the time we visit, so we will try next time! One of our favourite trips was this one, when we went up to Glacier 3000 and we walked through the snow on a sunny day to La Quille du Diable, http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/11/la-quille-du-diable-vaud.html , this view really amazed us. It's indispensable going on a clear day, to enjoy of it. If it's too cold to walk there's a chance to stay at Botta's restaurant, and to go to the view point on the terrace. It's located at the same building where you arrive with the cable-car.

Una de nustras excursiones favoritas fue ésta, la subida a Glaciar 3000 y el paseo sobre la nieve para llegar a La Quille du Diable, http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/11/la-quille-du-diable-vaud.html, sus vistas realmente nos imrpesionaron. Es indispensable ir en un día despejado para disfrutarlo. Si hace despasiado frío para andar también existe la posibilidad de quedarse en el restaurante del arquitecto Botta e ir al mrador al que se accede desde la terraza del edificio. Todo complejo, restaurantes y llegada del telecabina forman parte del diseño del arquitecto.

Geneva, city of luxury

Geneva, city of luxury. When you think about Geneva, luxury might be the first word coming to your mind. While visiting the city you can see it's full of exclusive shops: watches, expensive clothes, the best fine jewellery, etc.  Despite its small size compared to London or Paris, with a population of 200.000, Geneva attracts a lot of tourists just for shopping.  But this city is really well known for its watch industry, that dates back to mid 1600’s, some of them are located right in the city centre: Patek Phillipe, Frank Muller, Piaget, Omega, Swatch...

Ginebra, ciudad de lujo. Cuando piensas en la ciudad de Ginebra, "lujo" es la primera palabra que te viene a la cabeza. Y cuando la visitas, te das cuenta de que no es por falta de motivos, las tiendas más exclusivas del mundo tienen su hueco en esta ciudad de 200.000 personas. A pesar de su pequeño tamaño en comparación con Londres o París, Ginebra también atrae a muchos turistas sólo por sus tiendas. Pero esta ciudad es realmente conocida por su industria de relojería, que data de mitades del siglo XVII, algunas de las marcas están situadas justo en la ciudad: Patek Phillipe, Frank Muller, Piaget, Swatch, Omega... 

We went for a walk last weekend in a rainny day and meanwhile we did some shopping. It's not a goog idea going to Geneva by car  because of its horrible traffic, probably due to its geographical situation with the lake  spliting the city in two parts. One of its symbols is the water stream that reaches over 30 metres of height, placed in the lake.

El fin de semana pasado fuimos a hacer unos recados y ya aprovechamos para hacer algunas compras. Uno de los motivos por los que no nos gusta ir a Ginebra en coche es el tráfico de la ciudad, tenemos la sensación de que da igual que sea entre semana o sábado que siempre tardas muchísimo desplazarte por allí. Probablemente debido a su situación geográfica, rodeados por el ago. Uno de sus símbolos es el chorro de agua que sale del lago, de unos 30 metros de altura.

Geneva is the city that hosts the highest number of international organisations in the world, being a centre of diplomacy and hosting the headquarters of the United Nations and the Red Cross. It deserves also a visit for its botanical garden, different museums and mainly for its old town (ancient cathedral, palaces, town hall...) you'll see this part of Geneva soon in our blog. Ginebra es la ciudad que alberga el mayor número de sedes de organismos internacionales en el mundo. Es un centro de diplomacia, con las Naciones Unidas y la Cruz Roja. Merece también una visita por su jardín botánico, variados museos y sobretodo por su casco antiguo (catedral, palacios, ayuntamiento..) Podreis ver esta parte de Ginebra pronto en el blog. Philippe Halsman, Musée de l'Elysée

Philippe Halsman, Musée de l'Elisée. There are always interesting exhibitions in Lausanne's museums, and one about Philippe Halsman's work is nowadays going on in Le Musée de l'Elisée. Called "Astonish me", it consists of more than 300 pieces of his vast portrait gallery of celebrities, like Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Albert Einstein or Winston Churchill. Some of his photos became XXth century icons!

Philippe Halsman, Musée de l'Elisée. Siempre hay exposiciones interesantes en los museos de Lausanne, y actualmente hay una sobre el trabajo del fotógrafo Philippe Halsman en el museo de l'Elisée. Llamada "Sorprendeme", consiste en más de 300 piezas de su gran galería de famosos, como Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Alberto Einstein o Winston Churchill. Algunas de sus fotos llegaron a ser iconos del siglo XX.



We always like spending a Sunday morning in this photography museum, specially in rainny days! It's placed in an ancient mansion on a small natural platform close to the Ouchy area which provides a breathtaking view of Leman lake. All exhibitions there (four each year) are really fascinating, like the last one of Sebastiao Salgado, called "Genesis", now in the Caixa Forum museum in Madrid. We really suggest you to visit it!

Nos gusta pasar alguna mañana de domingo en este museo, sobretodo los días lluviosos. Está situado en una antigua mansión sobre una ligera colina natural cerca de la zona de Ouchy, gracias a lo cual tiene una impresionante vista sobre el lago Léman. Todas las exposiciones, 4 al año, son realmente fascinantes, como la última que vimos del fotógrafo Sebastiao Salgado, "Genesis", ahora en el Caixa Forum de Madrid. Os recomendamos de verdad que si podeis, vayais a verla. Es impresionante.

Les Diablerets village, Vaud

Les Diablerets village, Canton de Vaud. This last weekend some friends of us, Javier and Elisabeth came to visit us from Madrid. We decided to show them a typical Swiss mountain village before going up to Glacier 3000. Les Diablerets isn't far from Lausanne and the weather forecast for last Saturday was perfect (not like in the Leman's area where is was foggy the whole day). We love the Swiss alpine architecture. All the façades (some of them with inscriptions) and balconies done in old wood creating a magic winter atmosphere

Les Diablerets, Canton de Vaud. Este fin de semana han venido unos amigos a visitarnos desde Madrid, Javier y Elisabeth. Decidimos enseñarles un típico pueblo suizo antes de subir al glaciar 3000. Les Diablerets no están lejos de Lausanne, y la previsión meteorológica para el pasado sábado era perfecta (no como en la zona del lago Léman dónde hubo niebla todo el día). Nos encanta la arquitectura Suiza alpina. Todas las fachadas y balcones en madera creando una atmósfera mágica e invernal.

 
It's nice when friends and family come to visit us and we go all over the country looking for new places, mountains, restaurants etc, We disconnect completely from work and rutine, feeling as  if we were on holidays. 

Nos encanta cuando amigos o familia vienen a visitarnos y nos recorremos Suiza buscando nuevos lugares especiales, como montañas, pueblos y restaurantes. Conseguimos desconectar completamente del trabajo y la rutina, sintiéndonos de vacaciones, incluso aunque sólo sea un fin de semana.

Leysin - La Berneuse (2048m.), Vaud

Leysin - La Berneuse (2048m.), Canton de Vaud. Two weeks ago the firsts snows arrived to the mountains (only to melt over the next week) So we wanted to enjoy them with an excursion at altitude. We phoned on Saturday to the Leysin's tourist office to know if it was possible to hike down from the top of Berneuse to the town. They gave us the ok! We were there early the next morning, ready to go up in the telecabine. We spoke to the person selling the tickets about our plan, but he advised us against it, because of the amount of snow, around 40 cm. Even like this, we decided to go up to see the views.

Leysin . La Berneuse, Canton de Vaud. Hace dos semanas las primeras nevadas cayeron en las montañas cerca de Lausana (fundiéndose a la semana siguiente). Así que quisimos verlo en directo. Llamamos el sábado a la oficina de turismo de Leysin para ver si era posible andar desde la cima de La Berneuse hasta el pueblo. Nos dieron el visto bueno, así que a la mañana siguiente estábamos allí, listos para coger el telecabina. Le contamos al vendedor de tickets nuestro plan, y nos aconsejó por completo hacerlo a causa de la cantidad de nieve que había, unos 40 cm. Incluso así decidimos subir para disfrutar de las vistas desde el restaurante.
  

Just to see the Lake Leman from there it's worth to go up, with all the snowed mountains around us!! We saw we were not really prepared for this amount of snow, but once there we went to the Tournant Restaurant Le Kuklos to drink a hot tea with our friends and to discuss our possible excursion. The restaurant is circular, there is a fix circle shaped part in the center, and other concentric circle that is turning very slowly, you can take a seat  and 1h 35mins. later you'll have turned around. Finally we decided to go down in the telecabine and to do a small part of the green hiking path (see plan linked).

Sólo por tener esa vista del lago Léman junto a todas las montañas nevadas a nuestro alrededor, merecía la pena subir. Fuimos al restaurante que hay en la cima, Restaurant Tournant Panoramique Le Kuklos, un restaurante que gira! Allí nos tomamos un té con nuestros amigos para pensar sobre nuestra posible excursión o alternativa en su defecto. El restaurante es muy curioso, es un edificio circular, con dos piezas, un círculo central fijo, y otro concéntrico que va girando muy despacio, te puedes sentar a comer y 1h 35mins después, habrás recorrido las vistas a tu alrededor, los 360°. Finalmente decidimos bajar en el telecabina y hacer una parte de la ruta verde (ver plano adjunto abajo)

Grande Dixence, Valais

Grande Dixence, Valais. Last summer we decided to visit the Grande Dixence dam in the Val d'Hérens. We were really impressed by this huge concrete construction. It is the world's highest concrete dam, standing 285 meters. We arrived by car to the bottom of the dam, and from there we took the cable car to reach the top (remember to take some cash with you, credit cards are not accepted. The price is 10.-) Once you're at the top, you'll enjoy the great views of  Val d'Hérens and the Lac des Dix. An amazing 360º panorama view of the impressive landscape. Presa de la Grande Dixence, Canton de Valais. El pasado verano decidimos visitar la presa  Grande Dixence en el Val d'Hérens. Realmente nos impresionó mucho esta enorme construcción de hormigón en plena naturaleza. Es la presa a mayor altitud del mundo, (cerca de 2000m.), y se eleva 285 m. Llegamos allí en coche a la parte de abajo, y desde allí cogimos el teleférico a la parte alta (recordad coger algo de dinero ya que no aceptan tarjeta de crédito, son unos 10.-) Una vez arriba, podreis disfrutar de las increíbles vistas del Lac de Dix. Desde ese punto hay varias rutas, siendo la más conocida el Chemin des Bouquetins.

Unfortunately the lake was not completely full of water. The lake is full between september and january to produce more electricity for heating, to fight  winter´s cold temperatures. We would like to visit it again with fresh snow this winter. There are some aerial photos of the dam and lake in the Swiss tourism website that are really incredible. Desgraciadamente el lago de Dix no estaba rebosante de agua. Se llena completamente entre septiembre y enero para producir más electricidad debido a la calefacción para combatir las frías temperaturas. Nos gustaría visitarla otra vez con una nevada reciente este invierno. We really encourage you to go if you are travelling around Switzerland. Maybe it isn´t in the highlights of the travel guides, but you´ll never regret it if you visit this massive construction and the landscape around it. Os recomendamos mucho ir a la presa si estais visitando Suiza. Puede que en las guías no figure entre los lugares más visitados, pero no os arrepentireis de visitar esta brutal construcción y el paisaje que la rodea.
