Terrasses de Lavaux, Vaud. To enjoy one of the last sunny days of the season, this Saturday we went walking with some friends through the vineyards of Lavaux region. It's a famous area located really close to Lausanne that includes more than a dozen villages from Lutry to Vevey, among them the lakeside district capital of Cully and hillside villages such as Grandvaux and Epesses. It's a beautiful path between the terraces of wineyards with an impressive view of Lake Leman and the Alps. All the vignoble de Lavaux is protected as Unesco World Heritage Site from 2007.

Terrazas de Lavaux, Vaud. Para disfrutar de los últimos días de sol y calor hemos ido este fin de semana a andar por los viñedos de la región de Lavaux. Es un área muy cercana a Lausana que engloba los pueblos entre Lutry y Vevey, incluyendo Cully, Epesses y Grandvaux. Es una ruta increíble entre las terrazas con vides y el lago Leman. Se aprovecha el espacio al máximo incluso, incluso las terrazas más pequeñas. Todo éste área está protegido como Patrimonio de la Unesco desde 2007.  

Before leaving from Lausanne, we stopped by our favourite Italian place, Mauro traitteur, close to Pont Bessières, to take focaccias for lunch . Our hiking started in Epesses, where the wineries where opened, because of the wine harvest; a special smell floated in the whole town due to the rests of the grape-juice. That created quite a unique atmosphere. A bit later in the path, there was a view point, prepared for picnics, so we ate there enjoying of the sun and the views. This time our Lavaux walk finished at Saint Saphorin!

Antes de salir de Lausana, cogimos unas focaccias de nuestro sitio italiano favorito, dónde las preparan para llevar, http://www.maurotraiteur.com/. Nuestra excursión empezó en Epesses, con las bodegas abiertas por la vendimia!, ese olor partícular de los restos del mosto invadía todo el pueblo, creando una atmósfera especial. Un poco más tarde, en un punto de observación, comimos disfrutando del sol y las vistas. Nuestra ruta terminó en St. Saphorin.

We had the chance to see some workers picking up the last grapes of the season. Like the vineyards are built on relatively small portions of contiguous land, sometimes with big slopes, much of the work is still done by hand.

Tuvimos la suerte de ver a varios trabajadores recolectando las últimas uvas de la temporada. Como las viñas están plantadas en pequeñas porciones de terreno, algunas veces con grandes pendientes, la mayoría del trabajo es hecho a mano.

Trains between Lausanne and Montreux stop at several points in the Lavaux, including Cully and Vevey. And there is also the Train des Vignes or Wine Train from Vevey to Chexbres for a pleasant excursion. For us this is the best part of Leman's lake shore, even better than the cities, and especially in Autumn, with the yellow and orange colours contrasting with the blue of the lake. Thanks for following us, see you next week!

Los trenes entre Lausana y Montreux tienen parada en varios puntos de Lavaux, incluyendo Cully y Vevey. Y existe también el tren panorámico de las viñas, desde Vevey hasta Chexbres, para un paseo tranquilo. Para nosotros esta es la parte más bonita de la costa del lago Leman, mejor incluso que las ciudades, y especialmente en otoño, con los ocres y amarillos contrastando con el azul del lago. Gorges de l'Areuse, Neuchâtel

Gorges de l'Areuse, Neuchâtel. After having been once in Noiraigue, to see the Creux du Van, http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/04/le-creux-du-van-neuchatel.html, we never thought we would come back to this area to make another hiking path so interesting. But we did it! The Gorges de l'Areuse is an excursion mostly for autumn, when you can see the espectacular colours of the leafs in trees and on the ground. The randonnée starts at Noiraigue, but we left  the car at Boudry (where we would finish). When you're at the station you can't imagine there's a river channel so beautiful really near by. To have a good start we drank a hot chocolate with a super nice croissant at the only bar in town! L'auberge, in face of the station.

Después de haber ido una vez a Noiraigue, a ver la Creux du Van http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/04/le-creux-du-van-neuchatel.html, nunca pensamos en volver a esta zona de Suiza a hacer otra excursión tan interesante. Pero volvimos! Las gargantas de l'Areuse es una ruta principalmente para el otoño, cuando se pueden disfrutar de los espectaculares colores de las hojas. El sendero empieza en Noiraigue, dejamos el coche en Boudry (dónde terminaríamos). Cuando llegas a la estación es difícil imaginar que existe ese espectacular curso de un río tan cerca. Para comenzar con buen pie nos tomamos un chocolate con un croissant en el único bar del pueblo. L'auberge, al lado de la estación.
 

The path is really easy to find, you only have to follow the boards to Boudry (the typical yellow arrows all around Switzerland!) . It's an easy hike for everyone, with a duration of three hours, and about 11.5 km, but there are not big slopes to go up if you start in Noiraigue. In the middle of the itinerary there's a restaurant, it seemed nice but we didn't try it. http://www.la-truite.ch/ .

Es fácil encontrar el sendero, sólo hay que seguir los carteles de Boudry (las características flechas amarillas que hay por toda Suiza). Es una excursión para todos, con una duración de unas tres horas y 11,5 km., no hay grandes rampas si comienzas en Noiraigue. Y en mitad de la ruta hay un restaurante que tenía buena pinta aunque no lo probamos. El único punto de civilización en el recorrido!

Gornergrat rack railway, Valais. At the beginning of our Swiss adventures it was just me who was living in Switzerland, so when Eduardo came to visit, we used to plan special trips to do together. As this one. We wanted to see one of the highest mountains in Europe, a symbol of Switzerland. The Matterhorn. We rented a car in Lausanne and drove for two hours, almost up to Zermatt; as cars are not allowed in the village (thank God!), you have to leave it in a parking located in the village right before Zermatt, and arrive there by train.

Gornergrat, tren cremallera, Berna. Al comienzo de nuestra vida en Suiza, sólo vivía yo aquí, así que cuando Eduardo venía, preparábamos viajes especiales para hacer juntos, como éste. Queríamos ver una de las montañas más altas de Europa y el símbolo de Suiza. El Cervino. Alquilamos un coche en Lausana y condujimos hasta allí durante dos horas, llegando casi a Zermatt, como los coches están prohibidos en el pueblo afortunadamente, lo dejamos en un aparcamiento y llegamos allí en tren. 
 

Zermatt is a lovely town, with the typical Swiss mountain constructions, wooden chalets etc. Once there, we took the rack railway to Gornergrat! Quite expensive. (almost 82.- without demi-tarif) It's not easy to describe the views from this platform at 3135 m. The glacier below, all the 4000m. peaks around you and just in front of you the Matterhorn. We drank a coffee while sunbathing in the terrace and admiring the amazing panoramic views.

Zermatt es un pueblo encantador, con las típicas construcciones suizas, los chalets de madera etc. Una vez allí cogimos el tren cremallera hacia Gornergrat, algo caro (casi 70 €, sin la demi-tarif), no es fácil describir las vistas desde esta plataforma a 3135 m. de altitud. El glaciar debajo, todos los picos alrededor y justo enfrente el Cervino. Tomamos un café admirando las increíbles vistas.
 

The story of the first climb to this mitical mountain, the Matterhorn, was very interesting and dramatic. The leader was Edward Whymper. After several attempts, the decisive year 1865, Whymper returned with new plans, deciding to attack the Matterhorn via its south face instead of the Italian ridge.  Four of the seven men of the team lost their lifes as a result. "We remained on the summit for one hour - 'One crowded hour of glorious life'," wrote Whymper. But after that, in the descent, the euphoria turned to tragedy: "For a few seconds we saw our unfortunate companions sliding on their backs, and spreading out their hands, endeavouring to save themselves. They passed from our sight uninjured, disappeared one by one, and fell from precipice to precipice on to the Matterhorngletscher (glacier) below, a distance of nearly 4,000 feet in height. From the moment the rope broke it was impossible to help them," wrote Whymper.

La historia del primer ascenso a esta mítica montaña, el Matterhorn, fue muy emocionante a la vez que dramática:  "Lo logró el 14 de julio de 1865 una cordada liderada por Edward Whymper y acabó trágicamente cuando cuatro de sus miembros cayeron hacia la muerte en el descenso. Llegaron a la cumbre Edward Whymper, Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Dougan, Douglas Hadow, Michel Croz y Peter Taugwalder, padre e hijo, a través de la arista Hörnli y la encontraron considerablemente más fácil de lo esperado. Sin embargo, en el descenso Hadow se resbaló, golpeando a Croz en los pies y arrastrando a Hudson y Douglas con él. Los siete estaban atados juntos, y podrían haber muerto todos, pero la cuerda se rompió, enviando a los cuatro citados hacia la muerte en el glaciar del Cervino, 1400 metros más abajo. Más tarde, se encontraron sus cuerpos, salvo el de Douglas, y se enterraron en la capilla de Zermatt"

 

Freitag Store, Zurich

Freitag's store, Zurich. Freitag is a brand that makes bags and other complemets from used tarps. With this idea of recycling, they have built this original shop in Zurich, in a very trendy neighborhood known as Zürich-West, close to the Viadukt. It's as if they had just stacked containers; by going up the stairs one can see the whole shop and then arrive to the top, where there's a terrace to take a look all around and go "truck spotting" as they say. The asymetric tower rises from a 4x2 basis. They use space very efficiently, with all his products placed in white boxes with pictures outside to identify idem.

Tienda Freitag, Zurich. Freitag es una marca que hace bolsos y complementos a partir de lonas de camiones. Y con esta idea de reciclaje han construido esta tienda tan original en Zurich, en un barrio muy cool conocido como Zurich West, cerca del Viadukt. Es como si simplimente hubiesen apilado containers, y por su escalera, además de recorrer la tienda llegas hasta la terraza que tienen en la cubierta del edificio para "localizar camiones", como ellos dicen. La torre es asimétrica y se levanta sobre una base de 4x2 containers. El espacio es usado de forma muy eficiente, todos sus productos están metidos en cajas blancas de poca altura, con fotos por fuera para identificar el objeto.

When we were there we also wanted to visit the stores that are close to this shop, inside the arches of the old viaduct. They have really beautiful design furniture, but we had time just to visit one of them; later, we went to eat a quick bite to Markthalle, a charming market. All this area has been part of a large urban project to reactivate this formerly industrial district.

Cuando estuvimos allí quisimos ver las tiendas que están cerca de ésta, dentro de los acrcos del antiguo viaducto. Tienen muebles de diseño muy bonitos, pero sólo tuvimos tiempo de visitar una de ellas. Después fuimos a comer algo a Markthalle, un mercado con mucho encanto. Todo este área ha sido parte de un proyecto de remodelación para la reactivación de este barrio industrial. 

Restaurant Le Tsalè, Les Paccots

Le Tsalè restaurant, Les Paccots. Last weekend we've been to this restaurant on our way to Fribourg. Some friends gave us the recommendation, It's really well-known in the Suisse romande when you're talking about fondue. We tried to have dinner there once last winter, but without doing a reservation before, it was impossible, completely full, and they talked to us like if we were nuts for having gone without booking in advance! This time we phoned before going, It was last Saturday, a really sunny day, and we went at 14.00 h. an hour a bit strange for eating, so we didn't have any problem with the reservation (for dinner time they already had a table for 60 people!) 

Le Tsalè restaurante, Les Paccots, Fribourg. El pasado fin de semana fuimos a este restaurante en nuestro camino a Friburgo. Algunos amigos nos lo habían recomendado, así que nos presentamos allí un domingo el invierno pasado, pero estaba lleno. Nos dijeron que si estábamos locos por ir sin reservar! Esta vez llamamos antes de ir, reservamos a las 14:00, una hora algo extraña pero así no tuvimos problemas para la reserva, por la tarde noche ya estaba llena con una mesa para 60 personas!

We were told about the fondue, so we tried it! We also ordered "croûte au frômage", and a typical sausage with vegetables. Everything was really good, the fondue was not salty, very soft, so we weren't disappointed. You should always cheese fondue with white wine! We were said if you do it with water it can makes your stomach hurt (for kids some tea)

Esta es una imagen antigua del restaurante. Ha conservado el mismo tejado, hecho de madera y toda la granja. Nos hablaron de la fondue, así que la probamos, además de "croûte au fromage" y una salchica típica con verduras. Todo estuvo realmente bueno, la fondue no estaba salada (como ocurre algunas veces) así que no nos decepcionó. Recordad si tomais fondue tomarla siempre con vino blanco!

The restaurant was charming, everything made in wood, with a lot of details, some edelweiss flowers dried (a flower very typical from Switzerland), cowbells, and a huge fondue at the entrance. As we went on a sunny day we ate outside, where the tables were not so beautiful. El restaurante tiene mucho encanto, todo hecho en madera, con muchos detalles como algunas "edelweiss" secas sobre un muro (la flor típica de Suiza), cencerros y un gran recipiente para hacer la fondue en la entrada. Como fuimos un día soleado comimos fuera, dónde las mesas no estaban tan cuidadas. El teléfono para reservar es 021 948 0700. Nos vemos la semana que viene!
