Restaurant glacier 3000, Mario Botta architecture

Restaurant Glacier 3000, Mario Botta architecture.  It's been a long time since we  have posted, we had taken a little break. This week we want to continue our Glacier's 3000 post. http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2014/03/glacier-3000-vaud.html  Before heading out to the cable car to Col Du Pillon, to finish our trip, we stopped at Mario Botta's building for a nice drink at Restaurant Botta in a peaceful evening time jaunt along the mountains and the snow.  The modern metallic building juts out over the mountain, giving diners a panoramic view over the Bernese, Vaud and French Alps.

Restaurant Glacier 3000, Mario Botta architecture.

Building a restaurant 3,000 metres above sea level was a special challenge, said Swiss star architect Mario Botta. "You only do it once in a lifetime" and it's worth a visit alone, you just need to get to Col Du Pillon and then ride on the cable car for 15 minutes (a little bit expensive 65.-) which takes you up to the top. Once there you're free to enjoy breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains all around and the masterpiece of architecture!

We took a detour around the building before riding out the cable car to go down until the view point. The building contains a restaurant, a self-service and a picnic area with a terrace. The building presented a special challenge not just for the architect, Botta who has built banks, offices, libraries and museums all over the world. Up to 70 skilled workers, as well as materials, had to be transported to the summit on a daily basis. The work often had to be interrupted because of snowfall, storms or the cold at 3000m.!

Thanks a lot for being there!! :) See you next week!

Rolex Learning center by SANAA, Lausanne

bus rolex learning center

Rolex Learning Center, Lausanne. This amazing building is a library (among another things) designed by the  Japanese architectural firm SANAA. It's located in the EPFL campus, École Polytechnique Fédéral of Lausanne.  It's made of concrete, creating a fluid space in the interior for students to  work, study and relax in the puffs that are spread all over de slopes of the building. While the building is a perfect rectangle when seen in a plan, the holes (patios) and slopes that define the interior space give the building a completely organic look.

The floor ondulates gently, always in parallel to the ceiling , with few visible supports, it touches the ground lightly. In this fluid space there're different areas: a cafeteria, a very nice restaurant, social spaces, spaces to study, a library, etc. If you're a student in the EPFL you can book a study box. This building makes you to want to be an student again to enjoy these spaces. Once, we ate at one of its restaurants, even the menu of the day was great, (not student price, though). So for a rainy day in Lausanne is the perfect place to visit, one of the best buildings in Switzerland.

stadelhofen schedule train zurich

Stadelhofen’s train station, Santiago Calatrava. Walking around Zurich's downtown area we came across this train station. We don’t really like Calatrava’s architecture that much, but we really appreciate some of his buildings, like this one and the Sondica  airport.

Under our point of view, the most interesting theme in this project is how nature is a part of the building itself. There's a pergola created with steel trusses in the top part of the building, full of vegetation. The rebuilt topography creates an interesting urban space in several levels, connecting  the platforms with the galleries with stairs.

Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures of the underground level but there is a hall with heavy concrete columns and arches. Natural light is brought to this space using glass blocks placed in the floor of platforms. It's worth a visit if you are an architect or you're interested in architecture.

We would like to thank our friend Clara Masiá for her collaboration in our blog!

Bellerive-Plage, Lausanne

bellerive lausanne

Bellerive-Plage, Lausanne, Vaud. One of our favorite places to enjoy the warm weather during the summer time. This complex is an example of funcionalist architecture, with swimming pools and a round building containing the entrance hall and the restaurant. It creates the initial point of a 400 meters long curved axis of concrete. In this building are located the changing rooms, taking up two levels: one for women and one for men. On the third floor there's a beautiful sun terrace and the restaurant.

The entire complex was built from 1936 to 1937, during a time of economic crisis. The project was part of a plan to counteract unemployment: to promote job-creation machines were not allowed on the construction site. The architect was Marc Piccard from Lausanne. He was also responsible for enlarging the site in 1962. A meticulous renovation was carried out in 1993 by the architects Inès Lamunière and Patrick Devanthéry, with careful attention to the historical parts of the building.

Every detail is well-designed as the handrails, the pergolas for sun protection or the springboards. It surprising how modern this building looks in spite of its construction in 1936!

We´ve gone there in may last year, one of our first “architectural” visits in Switzerland and we were not disappointed. But it´s also true that we’ve found the complex like “unreal architecture”, i mean, buildings are really great but there are taking part in a kind of sculpture open-air museum, not in a real place. That makes no easy to judge the buildings as architecture. The real integration in nature context are not really well projected except by the Tadao Ando´s building, for us the best one.

Last weekend, we've had a great time in Lyon. The second biggest city in France is only 200 km away from Lausanne. Once there, one of the most popular's attractions is the gallo-romain museum, in the Fourvière hill with an amazing view of Lyon. This museum was built and designed by the architect Bernard Zerhrfuss in order to preservate the roman ruins placed in this hill, especially the Ancient Theatre of Fourvière and the Odeon of Lyon. Inside the building we've found a really good archaeological collection, but especially an excellent building in concrete, it is formed by an spiral ramp descending and branching out into the rooms and also with a well-designed windows  through which nature and roman ruins get into the building.

Museo Gallo-Romain, Lyon.

From the street you don't imagine this great building, when you get inside you can already appreciate the talent of the architect, there´s a rounded opening on top of the stairs to get to the exhibition, everything is a bit dark except the light that falls into the circular stair. Before you get there, there's a small window next to the info point, vere well placed. Once you get down you have a feeling of futurism with concrete shaped like that. There's a sucession of portics with the unions curved.
