Einstein kaffee, Berne

Einstein Kaffee & Rauchsalon. Last weekend walking around Bern, we´ve found this lovely and charming cafeteria. Most of restaurants were closed on Sunday but this one was opened (and full of people), really well-designed, with wood and stone in walls and ceilings, creating a cool atmosphere. With a menu of some cold food, mainly you can ask for caffees and cakes. And this is what we did.

Einstein Cafetería en Berna. El pasado fin de semana, caminando por Berna, encontramos esta acogedora cafetería. La mayoría de los restaurantes estaban cerrados el domingo, pero éste estaba abierto y lleno de gente. Realmente muy bien diseñado, con madera y piedra en paredes y techos, creando una buena atmósfera. En el menú encontramos algo de comida fría, aunque principalemente se pueden pedir cafés y tartas, que es lo que hicimos.

Château de Chillon, Vaud

Château de Chillon, Canton de Vaud. Everytime someone comes to visit us in Switzerland, we go to the castle of Chillon in Montreaux. 15 minutes from Lausanne by car and we arrive to one of the most famous and amazing castles in Switzerland. Chillon is listed as "Switzerland's most visited historic monuments". This medieval fortress on the shores of Geneva's lake creates a magic image due to its conservation and mainly because of the view of the Alps and the lake from its courts and windows.

Cada vez que alguien viene a visitarnos a Suiza, vamos al castillo de Chillon, en Montreaux. 15 minutos desde Lausanne en coche y llegamos a uno de los más famosos e impresionantes castillos en Suiza. Chillon es el monumento histórico más visitado de Suiza. Esta fortaleza medieval anclada en la costa del lago Léman y prácticamente flotando sobre el agua crea una imagen mágica debido a su buena conservación, y sobretodo debido a la increíble vista de los Alpes y el lago desde sus ventanas y patios.

The castle was built over a rocky island, throughout the tour you can see interesting models of it, and you'll appreciate the special place where it was located. There are a lot of rooms, all of them with their original paintings or part of them. For us, the best time to go is December, beacuse all the weekends of that month, they reproduce the life in the Middle ages in the castle, cooking, doing armors... and you can try original recipies of that period.

El castillo fue construido sobre un islote rocoso; hay maquetas a lo largo de la exposición donde ves claramente dónde fue construido. Está casi intacto, con sus numerosas salas, y pinturas en las bóvedas. Una de las épocas más interesantes para visitarlo es diciembre, ya que hacen una recreación de la vida en el castillo en la Edad Media. Venden productos hechos de manera artesanal, puedes comer en los salones platos tradicional hechos al fuego, ves incluso a herreros haciendo armaduras o soldados lanzando cañonazos, realmente merece la pena (en la web del castillo vienen las fechas exactas)

There's no cafeteria inside, but now it's planned to build one close to the entrance, there's a project to remodel all the access area to the castle. Chemin du Gruyére, Fribourg

Chemin du gruyère, Fribourg. When the sun comes, the excursions starts! This is one of the most famous "randonnées" in Switzerland, and we decided to do it last weekend. It consists in going down from Charmey (you can arrive there easily by bus) to Gruyères (12 km.). Through this itinerary you pass for serveral bridges, towns, rivers with the view of Gruyères all the time and the astonishing mountain, Moleson, completely full of snow. Chemin du Gruyère, Friburgo. Cuando el sol llega, las excursiones comienzan! Esta es una de las más famosas "randonnées" de Suiza, y nosotros decidimos hacerla el pasado fin de semana. Consiste en descender desde Charmey (a dónde se llega fàcilmente en autobus) hasta Gruyères, 12 km. A través de este recorrido se pasa por varios puentes, pueblos y ríos con, en todo momento, la vista de Gruyères y de la impresionante montaña, el Molèson, en esta época completamente llena de nieve. You walk besides the river all the time, and you have to cross it once, thorugh a very nice bridge. This time even if it was April we couldn't do the complete route, the previous days it was raining, so part of the path was closed. We did an alternative route, with a bit of road, but in a sunny day, with all the green fields around everything was beautiful.

Se camina a los lados del río y el lago durante toda la ruta, e incluso hay que cruzarlo por un bonito puente. En esta época, a pesar de ser abril, no pudimos hacer la ruta completa, los días previos estuvo lloviendo, así que parte del camino estaba cerrado, así que pasamos por una carretara no muy transitada, rodeados de campos verdes, que en un día soleado fue muy bonito.

There is also a lake, known as "Lac de Montsalvens". We've found this randonnée very easy and nice to see. But no so excited like others. However if you like chocolate and cheese, it's perfect route for you. Se pasa también por un lago, conocido como "Lac de Montsalvens". Hemos encontrado esta ruta muy fácil y bonito. Pero no tan emocionante como otras. Aunque  si te gusta el chocolate y el queso, es la ruta perfecta. En Gruyères se puede disfrutar la auténtica "fondue", y durante la excursión se pasa por la famosa fábrica de chocolate de Cailler, en Broc. Cully Jazz Festival, Vaud

Cully Jazz, it's one of the most important jazz festivals in Switzerland. It takes place in spring, in April. Cully is a town at Léman's lake, where almost all the population works producing wine. In this festival they open their wineries to the public, and you can enjoy a jazz concert inside of it while you're drinking the wine of the region. All the town has a charming atmosphere, but when the festival takes place, even more. The concerts are free, so sometimes it's difficult to see one because of the amount of people who is inside of the winery, but it deserves going there. There' re also concerts that you have to buy the tickets in advance beacause they are famous jazz players. The festival was born in 1983 because of Daniel Thenz et Emmanuel Gétaz, two jazz lovers.

Cully Jazz es uno de os festivales de jazz más importante de Suiza, junto al de Montreux. Tiene lugar en primavera, en abril. Cully es un pueblo que se encuentra en la orilla del lago Léman, donde casi toda la población se dedica a la producción de vino. Durante el festival los proprietarios de las bodegas las abren al público, y los grupos de jazz tocan dentro de ellas, pudiendo disfrutar de estos conciertos tomando un vino de la región. Todo el pueblo tiene una atmósfera especial, el pueblo ya de por sí es muy bonito, pero durante el festival aún más. Los conciertos son gratis, lo que hace que llegue a ser difícil ver alguno en ocasiones, dado el número de gente que acude. De todas formas hay conciertos para los que hay que pagar previamente por ser de músicos famosos dentro del mundo del jazz. El festival lo crearon en 1983 Daniel Thenz y Emmanuel Gétaz, dos amantes del jazz..

We've arrived there at 19:00, in time to see the Sunset and enjoy the view of the Alps from the shore with a drink. Meanwhile a crowd of people was arriving continously from the train station. After that we looked for a winery to listen a jazz concert but it was no easy to find a place for us! Every place was overcrowded, mainly the "caves" and the narrow streets of the town center.

Llegamos allí sobre las 19:00, a tiempo de ver el atardecer y disfrutar la vista excepcional de los Alpes desde la orilla del lago, tomando algo. Mientras tanto, una masa de gente llegaba constantemente desde la estación de tren. Después buscamos algún sitio para escuchar un concierto, pero no fue fácil encontrar un sitio para nosotros! Todo estaba lleno de gente, pincipalmente las "caves" y las estrechas calles del centro del pueblo.

Ancienne gare, Fribourg

This week we've visited another cool restaurant, Ancienne gare, but this time in Fribourg. A small nice city sorrounded by a river, 45 minutes from Lausanne by car. This restaurant and night club is located in the city center, in a very emblematic building, the old train station. It's a very well designed place. You can enjoy a quiet ambience during the day for a coffee or a brunch (like we did), but during the night it becomes a night club, with cool music, many people, cocktails and beers.

Esta semana hemos visitado otro bar/restaurante, el nombre es Ancienne Gare, y esta vez está en Friburgo. Una pequeña Ciudad, rodeada por un río, a unos 45 minutos de Lausana. Este restaurante y bar está situado en el centro de la Ciudad, en una edificio muy emblemático, la antigua estación de ferrocarriles. Está muy bien diseñado. Y se puede disfrutar de una café o un brunch en un ambiente tranquilo, por la mañana (como nosotros hicimos), pero durante la noche se transforma en un bar de copas, con buena música, mucha gente, cocktails y cervezas.

The brunch it's not expensive, you can choose from a list three things (toasts, fruit, eggs, ...) and you pay 10.- or five things and it's 15.-. Much more cheaper than in Lausanne! We did'nt book for a table but they told us is better to do it, so we were lucky. You can only have brunch on Sunday. During the week they also have a menu for lunch. 

 

El brunch está bien de precio, se eligen varias cosas de una lista (tostadas, fruta, huevos,...) si tomas tres cosas son 10.- y si tomas cinco 15.- Mucho más barato que los bruchs en Lausana!  Nosotros no reservamos mesa, pero nos dijo el camarero que era recomendable hacerlo, así que tuvimos suerte. El día para tomarlo es el domingo, los sábados no lo hacen. Entre semana tienen un menú a la hora de comer.

We love this place, decoration, ambience, also prepared for children (there's a room for them to play) and it's opened on Sunday! :) The food was correct for the price. We'll come back to see a concert and to have a drink at night in this bar! Nos ha encantado este sitio, la decoración, el ambiente, y abierto los domingos! :) Tienen una sala preparada para niños, para que jueguen ahí durante el día. Le Creux du Van, Neuchâtel

Creux du Van, Val-de-Travers. Neuchâtel. A walk through the forest. We took the train from Lausanne to Noraigue, with one change in Neuchâtel. We didn't know what to expect of this trip, we decided to go the same morning, hoping the weather was as good as forecast said. But... it wasn' like this. We arrived there and it was windy and cloudy, so we called the taxi of the town (there's only one) to go up to Creux du Van directly, in case there wasn't enough sun light to go up and down by walking.

Creux du Van, Val-de-Travers. Neuchâtel. Un paseo por el bosque. Salimos en tren desde Lausanne a Noraigue, con un transbordo en Neuchâtel. No sabíamos qué esperar de esta excursión, esa misma mañana decidimos ir, esperando que el tiempo fuese como decían las predicciones. Pero... no fue así. Llegamos a la estación de tren de Noraigue a la una de la tarde, sin apenas un rayo de sol y un viento basante fuerte. No sabíamos si tendríamos luz suficiente para subir y bajar andando hasta Creux du Van, así que preguntamos si había algún taxi en la zona, y nos dieron un número. Tras una llamada rápida, vinieron yn os subieron hasta allí en coche, y vimos ese precipicio natural tan impresionante.

It's a natural rocky cirque of approximately 1,400 metres of width and 150 metres of depth on the north side of Le Soliat, Val de Travers, Neuchâtel. A very well known, amphitheatre-shaped natural attraction of the area, it is located at the heart of a nature reservation area of 15.5 km². We walked around the top, seeing a family of bouquetins, a kind of goat. And we took the path to go down on foot through the forest. It was really slidy beacause of the rain of the previous days and the leafs on the floor, so it was a bit dangerous. But it´s worth a visit.

Se trata de un circo rocoso de unos 1,400 metros de ancho y 150 metros de profundidad, en la cara norte de Le Soliat, en el Val de Travers, en Neuchâtel. Es una atracción natural muy conocida en la zona, con forma de anfiteatro, situado en el corazón de una reserva natural de 15.5 km². Andamos por la cima, no recomendable si se tiene vértigo, y vimos una familia de bouquetines, un tipo de cabra autóctona. Cogimos el sendero para descender a pie atravesando el bosque que veíamos desde la cresta. Estaba muy resbaladizo por la lluvia de los dias previos y las hojas de los árboles por el suelo no ayudaban, un poco peligroso en alguna ocasión. Pero merece una visita.

Si quereis visitar este singular acontecimiento geográfico, la mejor manera es hacer una excursión caminando desde Noiraigue, cerca de cinco horas, subiendo, recorriendo todo el acantilado y bajando por el otro lado. Siedlung Thalmatt, Atelier 5, Bern

This week our post is dedicated to one work of the great Swiss architects Atelier 5. We've already done a post of their project, Siedlung Halen, also placed in the city of Bern  http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/01/siedlung-halen-atelier5-bern.html   This project was the precursor of this kind of housing in that time. There're references to Le Corbusier, as the use of concrete and many others.

Esta semana nuestro post está dedicado a los grandes arquitectos suizos Atelier 5. Ya hemos hecho otro post con su proyecto Siedlung Halen, también ubicado en Berna.  http://www.lovingswitzerland.com/2013/01/siedlung-halen-atelier5-bern.html . royecto que fue el precursor de este tìpo de vivienda. Hay referencias claras a Le Corbusier, como el uso de hormigón y muchas otras.

This dwelling complex was designed between 1967 and 1974. The name of the components of Atelier 5 was  Edwin Fritz, Rolf Hesterberg, Samuel Gerber, Hans Hostettler, and Alfredo Pini. The most part of them got a house in the complex and they're still living there. We don't know if the architects were conscient of how important would be nature in his project when they designed it, but when we arrived there we could see how the green had  taken all the protagonism to the concrete.

Este complejo de vivienda fue diseñado entre 1967 y 1974. El nombre de los componentes de Atelier 5 era Edwin Fritz, Rolf Hesterberg, Samuel Gerber, Hans Hostettler y Alfredo Pini. Muchos de ellos adquirieron una casa de la agrupación, y todavía viven allí. No sabemos si los arquitectos serían conscientes en la época de lo imporante que sería la naturaleza en su proyecto cuando lo diseñaron, pero cuando llegamos allí pudimos ver como el verde habia quitado protagonismo al hormigón.

 

To provide warmth to the corridors they mix two materials, concrete and wood. We were walking and taking pictures of the project and we were really lucky because we could visit the house of one of the members of Atelier 5 tha designed this project. It was amazing, and of course also the decoration, the furniture, etc. was great.

Para proporionar calidez a los corredores que dan acceso a las viviendas, mezclaron dos materiales, el homigón y la madera. No hay una vivienda tipo, hay muchísimos tipos de vivienda distinta, casas de varias plantas con jardín en la parte trasera, pisos con terrazas, de distintos tamaños, etc. Mientras paseábamos y hacíamos fotos de cada rincón nos encontramos con uno de los arquitectos fundadores de Atelier 5 y fue tan amable que nos enseñó su vivienda por dentro.  
 

We'd really recommend you to visit this example of architecture, if you are travelling around Bern (even if you aren't an architect), and you want to understand how was the begining of swiss architecture in the 50s 60s and also the perfect way of mixing nature, landscape and architecture. Realmente recomendamos visitar este ejemplo de arquitectura, si se está viajando cerca de Berna, incluso aunque no seais arquitectos. Permite entender cómo fue el comienzo de la arquitectura moderna suiza en los años 50 y 60, así cómo ver la manera perfecta de mezclar naturaleza, paisaje y arquitectura en un sólo proyecto.
